They are called this because that is what they are, Shacks, that have been built on the beach, using local supplies ie, palm tree trunks, the leaves from palm trees for the roof, they are really tied together with string, some have flagstone floors, but most have floors of sand.

They all have electricity, and toilets, some better than others. But you get some fantastic food in them.

the shacks are a focal point you will feel at home you will make friends you will want to return they are special

Try a google image search for "goa shacks" will give you some idea of what to expect.

you WILL find one that particularly appeals to you and yours, maybe it will be the location, the owner, the waiters, the food who knows!!
when you do, you will probably go back there every time you go to goa.
and you will most likely, keep going back to goa!!

My friend always laughs when I talk about the shacks. She says she imagined a grotty little straw and mud hut on the beach. When she saw them she was amazed that some even have an "upstairs". I love the social side of the shacks - the people who work there and the other holidaymakers who frequent them. We've made some great friends at the shacks. The beach experience wouldn't be the same without them. Plus I love the bacardi breezers on the beach at sunset.
