I'm starting a separate thread on this subject so that it isn't missed in either the sun cream topic or prickly heat thread.
I've just read about this chemical methylisothiazolinone in the Daily Mail online. Apparantly they have been successful in getting the ingredient banned after their investigations revealed it was responsible for triggering one of the worst skin allergies epidemics doctors had seen.
I've suffered with skin allergy a few times when in the sun & after one particularly bad case was advised by my doctor to take anti histamines 2 weeks prior to travel. Just last year I developed a bad rash on the ankle area on one of my legs. This flare up was a lot less than my previous episode but it still marred a few days of my holiday.
This chemical can also be present in moisturisers, shampoos & scarily baby wipes.
Anybody looking for more detail on which products contain this substance might find the following link useful:
I had an awful reaction in Florida ~20 years ago, ended up on steroids, antihistamines and hydrocortisine cream, and had a miserable 6 days of my holiday wasted, sitting in the shade fully clothed.
Touch wood, I haven't had a repeat even when the humidity is high.
Had to try a number of different anti allergy meds. til I found one that worked, loratadine.
My wife came out in a rash during a holiday in Turkey earlier this year. For the first time we were using Calypso sun lotion, after mistaking it for Malibu which we normally use. The ingredients are not published on the bottle. I saw the Watchdog TV programme which blew the whistle on sun creams containing allergens. For a later holiday in Boa Vista recently we were careful not to use Calypso, purchasing Malibu instead. My wife still came out in a rash leading us to suspect Nivea after sun as a possible culprit.
piz buin allergy is the worst one- nasty stuff i always thought it was the sun that brought me out in a rash until i read about piz buin and swapped for a different brand, i never had the rash again!!
It seems that this chemical may , while not causing the attacks, aggravate the symptoms. I have gone through the list and hopefully can now alleviate some of the worst symptoms.
Thank you for sharing this info.
Hopefully it will help you Prawn I love Piz Buin as it has a nice smell, most sun creams smell of coconut which makes me feel a bit I'll be checking their ingredients in future.
