susieg - if you read Caretta's post on the previous page, it will explain to you about the smoking ban. Some parts of it apply this year and some will apply next year.

i'm sure its been asked before but are you able to smoke in restaurants in turkey getting mixed info from friends

Your allowed to smoke in outside areas only, But dont expect it to be in force as most will just ignore it, Until such times the owner gets fined for allowing it.

Like many laws in Turkey, the smoking ban seems to be applied when it suits :rofl We went to Fethiye last weekend for a quick break and were able to smoke in some indoor restaurants but not others. As previously suggested, if/when fines start being dolled out, we'll probably see a rapid change in being able to smoke indoors. Changes are gradual in Turkey - I recall being at Dalaman airport three or so years ago and many staff were smoking, even the guys checking passports and giving out visas but now there is no smoking at Dalaman airport at all.

Like i said i do mind and i would tell somebody to move if they were blowing smoke all over me whilst i was eating.

How are you going to "tell them" to move if they are not breaking any law?
Wouldn't want smoke in my face while I was eating either but if it's allowed in the restaurant there's not a lot you can do about it. Other than choose a non smoking restaurant of course

The official law is that you cannot smoke ' indoors ' after June 1st or July 19th and I do not remember which. It will be hard to enforce as the people who should enforce it often light up as soon as they arrive inside a bar or restaurant. However in Public Buildings and The Airports it is strictly observed, ' No Smoking ' and the fine is 62 TL.Which is what it will be everywhere else.Enjoy your holidays.

Hi Maverick. From June 1st it is the law and any Bar or Restaurant owner allowing smoking inside his premises runs the risk of being fined 1000 TL. Not that many will observe this until they get caught. After all, this is Turkey.

RIK,Its from July 19th that you cannot smoke indoors,ie,restaurants. Most of us sit outside ,so it wont be any different for the smokers, you shouldnt be allowed then to smoke inside apts and hotel rooms, just go onto the bacony.

Hi Crispy.I asked my local bar owner and he said June 1st.I knew it was one or the other.Don't think it will make much difference though.

31st May was applied to government buildings and public building, airports etc, this year the law will start to include bars and restaurants that are indoors, outside restaurants and bar terraces are not covered.
