My hubby and I have booked the caribbean for next January, this will be our first long haul flight. Worth considering....in the brochures it states that it has the smallest rainfall that was why we chose this destination. Eygpt will be a nice temperature in January that is medium haul.

I would also suggest the Caribbean. Another idea would be Cape Town. Finally what about Phuket in Thailand?
i would recommend mexico...cancun...make sure you go to a place called xcaret though - simply the most exhilerating experience ever.
I know a couple who have a son whom they adopted from Thailand. They go back there with him every year immediately after Christmas and always have a great holiday. It's always warm and they usually combine a city holiday with a beach holiday by doing 2 centres.
what about malaysia ?
I'm afraid Thailand especially Phuket won't be warm that time of year...it will be red hot. Thailand or Malaysia will allow you to have a bit of variety to your hols...city/beach...jungle/beach for example..or you can just do the beach.
Strongly recommend a multi-centre holiday in Cuba - or why not visit Marrakech or Fes in Morocco?
What about The Gambia? Only 6 hours away and the same time zone as England.
Sri Lanka is really beautiful, and a very welcoming place. Food is cheap, and they really need the tourists after the tsunami.
