Why not eat the way some Greeks do and have your main meal at 4/5 PM either in Kamari, or better still, in Thira or Oia, then take a stroll down to claim your sunset spot.
Which ever way you do it, I'm sure you'll enjoy the sunset
Hi intervoice! It'll be an early shower on that day then, as we had intended eating in Thira. Thanks for the info.
Are you including others in these plans you're making? As someone I know says "You make plans for yourself, not everyone else"
Hi Shirley H You pay for your holiday so everyone does what they want to do when they want to do it. Got a lovely green top and sandals in which to watch the sunset at Thira!
Have a green cardi handy in case. Hubby says he knows of a good shop selling grapes at Thira. Going off topic a bit now we'll have a row.
Just to confirm what shirley h said, it does get very cool quickly after the sun has gone so go prepared accordingly !! The sunsets we experienced could have been better, hope they are for you.
We are staying at Kamari. Do you think a visit to Oia is worth it or would we be just as well off going to Thira, as it is a lot closer to our resort. Are the two places similar?
You can also see the sunset from Akrotiri ! Theres a very nice taverna / restaurant called Mama Thira on the road towards the lighthouse at Akrotiri and it has an excellent outdoor area with perspex shutters for if it's breezy!
Food there is excellent too.
Hi shirley h, why not do both !! Try Thira first and then Oia. Oia is very picturesque, take your camera or camcorder, the pictures that you see on postcards are mostly taken here, well worth the visit. The buses run late enough for you to get back to your resort, the journey to Oia is only about 25 mins. The bus service on Santorini is superb but wherever you want to go you have to go via Thira. You could also do what Greeklass advised and go to Akrotiri for a different experience. We were based at Perissa.
Do the sunset both in Fira and Oia.My sunset pics seemed to be better in Fira though! Most people think Oia is best and that's where people gather.. however, found a lovely restaurant on the caldera path called Flame in Fira, very fussy owner but nice food and drink...we went in October so needed to eat at around 6.30pm....
thanks for that. Since we're there for a fortnight most probably will go to both places, especially now that I know neither are too far away from Kamari. I just wondered whether both towns were much of a likeness. It seems that we'll be able to do the journeys by bus as I hear the buses run well into the night.
Hi shirley h, even if you decide not to go to Oia for the sunset, certainly make the trip anyway, the views are breathtaking, you won't be disappointed you went. When you get to resort, ask around as to where best to view the sunset. If the locals don't know then nobody does !! Hope you have a great time when it happens.
In Oia, most people hang out around the old ruins of the castle and any vantage point around the Windmill Cafe, people start looking for a spot an hour before..Kamaria, Oia and Fira are all very different to one another but since Santorini is such a small island very easy to visit and the bus service is excellent..to get to Oia, you will need to change buses in Fira at the bus interchange..the road to Oia is quite something in terms of sheer drops in places so keep looking ahead and not down if you're nervous!
