Best to take a card that you can use in a hole in the wall machine ...... but please tell your bank that you are going well in advance plus the dates, so they don't think your card is being used fraudulently and stop it for your safety.
I was wondering what to take too. We have been to Turkey for the last two holidays and they take just about any currency except their own. I think we spent more in £'s than we did in Lira. So I did wonder if Crete would be the same?
I don't think you will be able to spend sterling in Crete. Never come across it in Greece anyway.
We just use our Nationwide debit card to draw cash. There are no charges and you get the commercial rate of the day. Some bank's charges are quite steep.
You can find out before you go if there are ATMs in your resort with an online ATM finder.
Have a good holiday,

When I have been to Greece including Crete, we have always used Euros, never seen anyone even offer sterling to pay for stuff. It's not like Turkey where they take anything. The Euro is a hard currency, I dont think the Turkish Lira is.
Thanks for the advice. We'll take Euros then. I just hope it picks up a bit of value by August as it is very low at the moment.
duncan.... take sterling and change in resort [after you have done some leg work] you will find better exchange rates than in the uk, just take enough evro for your first day or so....
I think the rate has gone up a bit today. see http://www.comaretravelmoney.co.uk/
Thank goodness.
