Tavira's a quiet fishing village. Too quiet to stay at but OK to visit for a day.
I had a holiday from hell in Cabanas 2 years ago I thought I was going to Tavira which is a beautiful town but ended up 5 miles away in Cabanas. It was over the Christmas period so maybe its different in the summer. If I went back I would go to Tavira.
It is a very small village but lots of bars/restaurants (if there for 2 weeks you could eat in a different one every night).
It is less than 10 mins to Tavira (by bus or car) which (IMO) is a lovely town. You can also get to Monte Gordo, and over the Spanish border without too much effort (especially if you have a car) and the scenery around Castro Marim is gorgeous.
It's about 35-40 mins from Faro airport.

We think Tavira is one of the nicest towns on the Algarve and usually visit once every trip. a fair bit of siteseeing in the town, and some pleasant restaurants down by the river and fishing port. Was not to enamoured of Cabanas when we visited, although we did get a very good Portuguese set lunch when we were there.
Thanks for all your views
Horses for courses but I much prefer Cabanas to Tavira.
