Hi everyone
I am really torn on what to do with regards to my holiday in Thailand and would appreciate any advice or info on my rights to cancel the holiday.
I have booked a package holiday to Bangkok and Krabi for Christmas but am unsure on whether I should go due to the corrent problems as the situation appears to get worse every day. I know Christmas is a long way away but I am worried I will end up losing a lot of money and will have to spend my only holiday of the year at home if I leave it til closer to the time.
The tour operator was initially very reluctant to discuss the eventuality of us not being able to go on holiday and wasn't very clear about what would happen in the worse case scenario. Eventually, many emails later and many phonecalls later, they told me:
- if I wish to cancel now I will lose about £ 1000
- if I don't cancel now and I cancel around October (when the rest of the money is due) then I will lose the deposit of approx £2000
- If Bangkok becomes a no-go area, they are unsure if my stay in Bangkok can be cancelled and extend my stay in Krabi as I have been booked on "special flights" which are non-refundable (which I wasn't aware of until today)
Does this seem right to you? Am i going to lose all this money if the worse was to happen? I am unaware of my rights and any advice would be very much appreciated.
Thank you in advance for your time
I went back to Phuket last Dec but went via Singapore this time and had a great time. Bangkok is a great place to visit and the chances are that by Dec 2010 everything would be ok for you to visit but nobody really knows. I would be tempted to leave as it is but can understand your concern so why don't you ask your tour operator to change the Bangkok part of your trip to either Singapore or Kuala Lumpur, you can then fly to Krabi from either.
I was thinking of going back to Thailand this Dec but have decided to go to Cambodia instead via Kuala Lumpur.

thank you very much for your advice, I will contact them now and see if they can do that.
The flights to Krabi from KL & Singapore are with budget carriers (Tiger & Air Asia) so your Tour Op won't book you on those. You can get scheduled flights from Phuket which is 3-4 hours drive from Krabi.
You will be able to re-book (most likely) the Bangkok - Krabi flights for about £75 a head so you are just connecting through Bangkok if you did this at the moment.
My advice would just be to hold off for a bit.
