Thali is like the Indian equivelent of a Spanish Tapas, a bit of everything on a steel dish with different compartments  I used to have a Bhaji breakfast which consisted of bread roll, samosa, deep fried chillie, muttar (peas) and a cup of chai, very nice and it used to cost about 20 rps .

Really don`t know Candolim or Calangute too well as I spend most of my time in Vagator but try looking for local cafe type places as these are more likely to do them. I believe they do masala dosa at the Plantain leaf and also Idli Sambar which I would recommend you try for a real taste of Southern Indian food :?:

Hi,
I can highly recommend the Plantain Leaf, excellent authentic vegetarian Indian food & its ridiculously cheap. Beware the paper masala dosa though, its literally about 4ft long! Whenever they bring one out of the kitchen everyone in the place turns round to watch. You'll be safe from embarassment with the regular masala dosa though. From what I remember they do two different Thalis, again, both excellent!
We're going back for our fifth visit in December... can't wait!!!
Hope you enjoy,
LM

Sad but true, I dream of the thalis in the Plantain Leaf! I don't know about breakfast - there's enough to feed two (but I usually don't need help from a second person).

The Plantain Leaf is more cafe than restaurant but the food is great and the prices unbelievable.

Making me hungry too. Fortunately we have a true Indian Restaurant near us (none of your Chicken Tikka Masala rubbish) so I can have masala dosas, idli and puri whenever I want! Bit more expensive then 20 rupees though.

Hi Betty - in the Plantain Leaf, just ask for a Thali de Luxe - I think it's about 75 rupees.

I reckon the best bakery is the German bakery just over the Baga River in Baga. It's called Lila's. Great food and laid back ambience. Not cheap but worth a taxi one morning!

In Calangute, there is the Infanteria which OK. Some people love it but to be honest, I've always found it to be average.

well we went to the plaintain leaf for a meal, and I have to say it lived up to our expectations, we all had different meals, I had veg hakka noodles, mark had the Thalli de luxe, I think Ampora Julie had a potato & cauliflower curry, It was really nice. I think Mark found the thalli too much, and would have been sufficient for 2 people'
The plaintain leaf is a vegatarian restaurant, does not serve alcohol, and is non-smoking, and well worth a visit,

Hi Chilly
Tried the Masala Dosa last year and loved it
I really like the Plantain Leaf its different
Good luck with the giving up smoking.
I gave my self a date and stuck to it, was on 40 a day (at least)
I tell you I feel much healthier since giving up so go for it.
Take care

Plantain Leaf used to sell beer but it lost, or forgot to renew its licence a couple of years back. The Thali is worth forgoing the beer for an hour...and I enjoy a beer ...or two!

Hi Ginlizzy,
The thali that Mark had came on a huge stainless steel dish with a large dish of rice in the middle and 9 smaller dishes around it, each with a different dish, some were hot and others cold (raiti), plus 3 puris. He ordered a side dish of potato bhaji too! As Lin said, there was plenty for 2 people...... still the chickens enjoyed it for their breakfast next day!
