Well, we've done it Luci - after much discussion and alot of talking, we're going to Bally's - if anyone has heard anything bad about it - DON'T TELL ME !!
It's working out at 152$ about per night. Good or bad, we've done it.
One more little question - how long does it take to drive from los angeles to las vegas. We've got to get to Bally's in time for check in at 4.p.m.
And one more tiny question - is there anything to see en route from l.a. to l.v.
Thanks for your further advice ....!
$152 sounds expensive to me unless it's over a weekend or when there's a big convention.
Don't worry about getting there for 4pm. You can check in at anytime after that as people arrive in Vegas at all times of day and night.

$152 for Bally's does seem OTT. I managed to get the Celebrity Spa Suite in the MGM Grand for $144 last September. Is the rate you booked cancellable? I'm sure you can better that if you keep looking.
5 hrs max drive from LA to Vegas, some people can do it in 4 and a half, others take longer. There isn't a great deal to look at on the way to be honest. Bakersfield is a good point for a stop, and maybe Primm if you want to try the roller coaster there and maybe some outlet shopping. I prefer to just get to Vegas.

If you have booked Bally's direct with the hotel then you have the chance to change your plans if you find a better deal, but that may be unlikely if there are a few big conventions and a fight on at that time.

Ask for a renovated North tower room. Don't take a South tower room unless they promise it is renovated. We began and ended our trip at Bally's recently and the difference was huge.
First two nights, North Tower renovated room, very pleasant room; not much view, but hey, it's Vegas; coffee machine, nice bed, nice bathroom, nice furnishings.
Last night, South tower unrenovated room; partial fountain view through very dirty windows, no coffee maker, hard bed, clean but old bathroom with aluminium shower door that leaked, shabby, stained, threadbare and scratched furnishings, grubby looking carpet, stale (old?) smell even though it was a non smoking floor. We paid $50 per night midweek for both visits.
Bally's has an excellent location, especially if it is your first visit. I don't think you can beat the Flamingo/LVB corner for location. (Barbary) Bill's Gambling Hall for 99 cent margaritas and $2 draught Coors; Bellagio Fountains; Caesars Palace and Forum shops; Flamingo and Margaritaville; all within spitting distance.
