I am so sad to write this from sleepy Mahdia, as it is always so safe, unlike some of the stories one hears about the more touristy resorts - however, yesterday a lady was robbed by 2 youths passing on a scooter on the main road a little past the hotel. She was pushed to the ground, her handbag and gold jewellery stolen. She is Ok to a degree, but dreadfully upset and in shock. As expected of the people here, the hotel staff and police have been very supportive and helpful.
Could I please remind you all that it is advisable to walk facing oncoming traffic rather than with the flow, as this makes it more difficult for the scooter thieves to strike. Consider leaving your valuable jewellery at the hotel and don't carry too much money around with you. I am sure that the very great majority of tourists will be safe, but it is wise to take precautions. Tunisia in general has changed since the revolution. x
Sorry to hear this has happened Jenny, thanks for the timely reminder that wherever you are you need to take a few small safety precautions
