Must agree with tightjock about the Riverview restaurant. But the problem we had was that we went down for lunch almost every day and when we went at night there were loads of midges all over the place and landing on the menus, so we only had a drink and left. Food is great though. just order a drink to see if there is a fly problem at night. We were there at the end of November

Hi we were there at the end of November too I do remember a couple of nights when insects were really bad I am not sure if it was because it was unusually humid due to the bad weather in Chennai I remember one Wednesday night we had a table on the beach and like you had one drink and then moved shacks up to Doms and sat inside the shack which was better though we still put a napkin over our drinks and pierced it with straws. Thankfully this only happened a couple of nights in our 4 week stay :)
p.s. Adding this in Sept 07 when we were there in March 07 there were no insects at night and the River View was fabulous at night. they have excellant live music a couple of nights as well so keep your eye out for that oh and the Tandoori crab (kept dropped in a basket off the pontoon so fresher than fresh) is fantastic :)

Tightjock, sounds like I was there at the same time as you as I had my 50th on the beach on Nov 23rd at Bettys shack

We were there from Nov 12th for 4 weeks I wonder if we saw each other :?: Are you going back for your 51st (you could make it a tradition  )

we had a table set up specially on the beach with baloons and all the trimmings and we did meet 2 scottish couples who went into the shack to avoid the flies. I can remember the wife passing the cake around to these couples, dont suppost that was you. We are going north this year, but are going to try the Agonda beach hust down south for a night

Another must and not one that many "tourists" do is take a local bus somewhere its great fun. The trip from Cavelossim to Benaulim costs all of 8 rupees and driving fast through the villages over the bumps is like a theme park ride and then slowly going through the country-side sometimes stoping to put flowers at shrines. People watching as the locals get on and off a real experience :)

Another trip to try is the express bus from Margao to Panjim. 20Rps each way. There is a seperate ticket counter at Margao bus stand where a ticket guarantees you a seat. The bus leaves as soon as it is full, which is about every 5 mins. The journey takes approx 45 mins with only one stop at the medical college and hospital just outside Panjim. You get off at the bus stand where you can walk or get a richshaw into the centre. There are also loads of buses going to the market for 3rps.
The return journey is the same deal, buy a ticket at the counter and get a guaranteed seat back to Margao.
I think the express bus runs from 6.30am till 8.30pm each day. The cost is a bit cheaper than a taxi

Off to Goa in Feb 07 ( 4th time ) and ashamed to say i have never bothered to visit south Goa ( i think i am guilty of getting to comfy with north Goa, the people, the restaurants, ect ) so this time i am determined to spend a couple of nights there at least. And if reading your posts is anything to go by i am missing out on a hell of a lot,so i am after some advice from all you seasoned southerners, while we are away its my better half 's birthday so i am looking for a nice hotel / resort to stay for a few days, also rough transfer times / taxi fares from Marina Dourada ( Baga ) i dont mind paying a bit extra ( Goan standards ) for accomodation as it will be a birthday surprise any suggestions will be most appreciated.... many thanks KJF

There's a pretty good selection of hotels in Cavelossim, ie, Haathi Mahaal, Dona Sylvia, Holiday Inn or if you really want to spoil your good lady, then there's the Leela Palace (England Cricket team stayed their in April this year).

I would imagine a taxi from Baga would take about 2 hours which will fly by as the scenery is interesting. Can't advise you on cost though. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply M.A.G, as i am in Baga for 3 wks will i be better booking somewhere when i get there, and how hard is it to book over there, any idea how much notice i would have to give the hotels ( i was thinking of going in my middle week for a few days between 9th to 16th Feb ) also is there any price difference between booking here or when i get there

It isn't difficult to book whilst you are there, although, as it's a special occasion, I would book from the UK to ensure you get what you want. Take a look at the hotel websites:

http://www.theleela.com
http://www.haathimahal.com

For the Holiday Inn and Dona Sylvia look at:

Hope this helps and whatever you choose I hope you and your other half have a lovely time.

Thanks for the prompt reply M.A.G, the only problem now is choosing one , have you stayed at any of the places mentioned, and am i right the cost is for the room and not p/p

Hi there, I've not personally stayed at any of them but have taken a look around and know of people who have stayed and go back year after year. The Leela is in a fantastic location and has lovely ambience but is very expensive. The Haathi is nice but you have to run the gaunlet of lots of sellers on your way from the hotel to the beach, which is rather offputting. If I were you I would err towards the Holiday Inn.

Hope this helps.
