Can anyone give a newbie any basic rules for tipping. i.e how much for hotel porters, waiters etc. I note some taxi drivers appear to be expecting a lot just lately.
Thanks, David.
Taxis none, included in fare.
Hotel boys, 50 -100 rps.
Shacks / Restaurants 10%.
Else where 10-50 rps
Steve, are you gonna be there between 6th Feb and 21st Feb?
sam the b is on the ball except for the hotel boys Rs10 to 50 is quite enough, remember we are in India
You really should remember you're in India... There have been posts on here that everyone is getting greedy, so try and tip in relation to what they've done for you (to give an incentive for good service, which can be hard to find in Goa), also remember a basic wage is from 100 - 200 Rs/- per day! So giving a tip of 100Rs is a huge amount unless they're with you all day of course!!! :o) - This also adds to corruption as then peoplewant these jobs as they get bigger tips etc etc etc... Many places are including service tax (a tip anyway), but 10% is good (if you've had good service). For people to help with your things I wouldn't give more than 5 rs/- (if it's already their job), otherwise 10 rs /-
when we tipped in goa we always tipped about 100rps ,thinking it was nothing.last year we flew from goa to chennai to stay with my internet friend and his family.he is a very sucessful business man (makes the perfumes for the insence sticks)and he told us 10rps is the expected tip .hopefully this year we will try to stick to this ,otherwise they will start to expect more and it might get embarrising xxx jan
