You may want to check your current travel insurance policies for failure of a supplier cover.
The current Zoom failure has highlighted a missing componant in most travel insurance policies.
Most polices DO NOT cover the failure of an airline, and my Tesco policy does not seem to cover any supplier of transport or accomodation which results in having to cancell a complete trip so I will be reviwing my choice of insurer and looking at the cover much more closely.
Paying with credit card will cover for the failure of a single componant, but not other costs of not being able to use other componant of a trip you have paid for.
Allthough this apples to ALL travel it is particularly relevent for cruisers that DIY because you may miss the boat.

I was considering using Atlas Direct and on reading their policy online I'm sure they actually include this. However their policy is no use to me as I have a pre-existing medical condition and it was going to cost £213 on top of the standard policy.

or transport (whether as the result of error, insolvency, omission, default or
otherwise). You should direct any claim in this case to the provider involved;
I'm sure I read a policy that included it over the weekend when I was checking out various policies, but I'm damned if I remember which on it was.
I've been looking at the elite policy on worldwideinsure.com. Does this cover what you need? In fact I was wondering if it would be good for my cruise next year?
You also need to check that your insurance covers cruises as not all standard policies do.
Thanks for that info luci. I have no idea where to get insurance! I already have cruise cancellation insurance but will need one for all the rest of stuff. Most online insurance companies require me to be a resident of UK, which of course I'm not!!

As ever, the small print under the heading "what is not covered" is usually every bit as, or more, important than what is covered!
As it happens our policy is atlasdirect, and they are a good company, but clearly the policy will not cover airline failure (or indeed cruiseline failure!!) and, by implication the cost of the potentially missed cruise. Another reason to always get out a day or two earlier than sailing date, especially to the many of us using "budget" airlines.
Incidentally Atlasdirect definitely covers cruise holidays, as I always ask when we renew with them each year!
on-line only covers 16 consecutive days for cruise in a list of covered activities.
http://www.tescofinance.com/personal/finance/insurance/travelins/policy-doc-annual.html#f17
The phone in policy does not mention cruises at all and just says any organised activities.
The other thing with annual policies is that the start and end date of the travel needs to be within the insured period and cover ONLY starts when the policy starts.
So booking ahead of the end date of the policy means the current policy will not cover it and you are at risk till renewal if travel overlaps your renewal date you need to get confirmation that you are covered.
I am reviewing our annual approach as well as cover more closely for this years renewal and currently am self insuring a deposit for a Jan cruise.
My primary need for insurance is repatriation/medical of ourselfs once traveling, related parties have exisitng conditions which if resulted in cancellation would not be covered anyway.
Another thing to check carefully is the health notifications some require ANY condidtion in the last 2 years others only 3 month. So that will include things that are not normaly recuring like a break.

Check insurers in your country of residence.
That, of course, is what I am trying to do However, small print in English is difficult enough to understand, let alone in spanish!!!!
thank you!
Ive been insured with Direct Travel insurance for years, however upon receiving my annual renewal I note that the insurer has changed from AXA to AIG, yes the AIG in the news at the moment ,they do not cover Cuba in the worldwide section and as I am interested in a cruise that has a stop at Cuba I have decided not to renew with them.I have now taken out a policy with Atlas direct and it is actually cheaper. So be aware check that your ports of call are covered,

and the Post Office.

The US Government have just put I think 20 or 30 Billion into AIG today. Spoke to Direct Travel and there is as they say US AIG and UK AIG Am I worried about my insurance not particularly. Little point as today nothing or anyone is safe.
I also renewed a policy and had an overlap as taking the policy before I was 66 made a big difference and they will not insure over 65.
I also need to inform my Home Contents insurance that I am going to be away as they have a no of days policy.
My Buildings insurance although I pay a premium once a year is covered under a Master Policy for Goldsborough who are the Managing Agent. Know both the Company and the Broker who deals with any insurance issues.
I have also had to inform my insurance Company of a change in my medical circumstances ie seeing a Dr being referred to a Hospital and awaiting surgery. Letter confirming that this is accepted by them. So if I sneeze whilst I am away they would not refuse to let me blow my nose based on the fact I had failed to notify them. This is of course for an annual policy.

Just come across an article in the Telegraph stating that SPAM.com is offering online Scheduled Airline Failure Insurance (safi) which also covers financial failure of the other parts of the holiday which are not part of a bonded packaged holiday. Unlike other policies available they do not have a policy excess, no condition that they can cancel a policy in 7 or 14 days or that claimants have to obtain "written confirmation" from the liquidator that the third-party provider has become insolvent which could take months.
Cover is only £5 per person for 30 days and £1 thereafter

I normally purchase a family annual cover. Next year my daughter who will be 18 is not travelling with us. Do I have to get her a separate policy in her name?
If this is a general travel insurance question rather than relating to a cruise, it may be better posted in the Travel Insurance topic at the top of the General Holiday Enquiries forum.
Do you mean that your daughter will be travelling on her own? If so, she may need her own policy. You will find suggestions of companies on Page 1 of the topic above.
However you will have to check the T&C's of your own insurance policy to see what age of dependent children it covers. Also, some policies will cover the people named on the policy if they are travelling on their own, but others don't.
