I, like many thousands have had to cancel our holiday due the recent volcanic events.
Singapore Airlines have refunded promptly, the coach firm taking us to Heathrow have agreed to rearrange the journey, the people we were renting a house from have managed to re-let for one of the weeks, so, we have had one weeks refund. Everything good so far, until I contacted my travel insurers, GetMyTravel.
Fully expecting the "act of god" clause, or not paying out due to a "consequential loss" clause, I was stunned to be told that they will not proceed with a claim because I did not check in at the airport! Please contradict me, but were we not told on national news, and by the airlines, not to to travel to the airports? But to be told they will not even allow a claim because I didn't check in just beggars belief. Seeing the news programmes of empty airport terminals must mean lots of people took that advise; will many of them have claims refused due to this petty excuse?
I have requested the relevant details for the claim denial, so, if there is a governing body out there, I can take it further.
Ask for a final decision letter from your insurer than proceed with their Complaints Procedure. Once you have done that you can take it to the Insurance Ombudsman.

Considering they had 2 children, there were protests / riots in Bangkok, they would have to check out their hotel, head across town to a hellish atmosphere at Bangkok Airport to try and check in for a flight that the airline had cancelled two days previously (proof was available of this!) I told them it's an absurd situation. Naturally, they should do what the insurance company is telling them, but personally told them not to bother as the insurance company would have no option but to backtrack on this.
The insurers were just following a script that didn't take into consideration the exceptional situation. I have no doubt you don't have to worry about this. Get a letter confirming the flights cancellation and follow Luci's advice.
However, if you were booked on one of the cancelled flights that were re-instated at the last minute (of which there were a few), and didn't make the flight, there might be an additional obstacle or two.
I would what the excuse to not pay would have been if the flight had been cancelled because the airport was closed?
