Hi mel.w.76,

You can change Travellers Cheques in most hotels & banks in Bulgaria, BUT be aware that the commission is likely to be high (or the exchange rate low), which is why those of us who visit regularly tend to stick with cash.

Hi, Baldur is correct, cheques are a nightmare in Bulgaria as far as exchange rate goes ( plus you always need your passport ).
As you will see on numerous threads on this forum best by far is clean, unmarked or torn sterling (Not Scottish ) notes.
AND never change money on the streets or in the change booths unless you want to be ripped off.

I agree with both Baldur and Toonman. The first time we went to Bulgaria we took them & got stung for 10% commission.

Passports are best locked up in your safety deposit box 'cos if you lose them it's a real nightmare involving an unwanted trip to Sofia at your expense.

We only ever change our clean unmarked and untorn English banknotes, in 5,10 or 20 pounds, in either the hotel or bank. Dont take £50 notes because you will have difficulty changing them, they are worth more than the average Bulgarian earns in a month.

NEVER change money on the street or in booths, every year we stress the importance of this but every year people are caught out.

A cash card is useful and there are loads of ATM's, but don't rely on it, I have personally witnessed a card being eaten by one and that can really screw up your holiday.

The best buy in Bulgaria is your safety-deposit box for passport, tickets, insurance details, credit cards and cash.
