Hi all
Thanks to you guys on here (via my previous posts), I have now secured a flight to Las Vegas. Now all I need is you helpful lot to help me sort a hotel out. Here are my requirements:
I am going for the Ricky Hatton fight, so would like to be as close to the MGM as possible. One because that's where the fight is, and two because my mates are staying in the Excalibur, which I believe is close by.
I arrive at 10:30pm on Weds 5th December, and am staying 5 nights (Weds 5th, Thurs 6th, Fri 7th, Sat 8th, Sun 9th).
It is not difficult to get a hotel on the strip, but I'm going into this blind! For example, I was just going to book the riviera, which is only £200 for the 5 nights, but since reading the reviews on here, I will decide against it. I chose the Riviera, because it was on the strip, and also, it looks just how I imagined Vegas to be when I was a kid (Big bright lights etc, look at their photo). However, I am slightly put off now by the room and food comments on this site.
So, with that in mind, can anybody suggest a similar hotel, which is as close to MGM grand, is quite large, and has the same facilities as Riviera (Casino, swimming pool etc)
I'm soooooo looking forward to this trip (my 1st time to U.S.A), and I want it to be just like I imagined after seeing it on TV, hence that's why I don't want to stay in a motel etc. The more lights the better, if you know what I mean.
Now, after giving all those requirements, is there such a hotel with a similar price range and rating (3*) for the dates I have stated here.
Thanks all
The Luxor withing walking distance to the MGM grand not sure if you get 5 nights for £200 there through.we was there 2 years ago and there was a big fight on the amount of people there is amazing if i was you i would get the hotel booked up very quickly, the reivera is at the other end of the strip so not really that close,to be honest ive never been in the reivera its oppisite circus circus where i have stopped the hotel needs a little smarting up i reckon up that end of the strip with the 2-3 new hotels built up there but the rooms were very nice and in my eyes that what counts most....but i would book something up very quickly...
The Riviera is quite far away from the MGM. Can't you get into the Excalibur with your friends? For a budget hotel on the strip around the same price as the Riviera I would suggest http://www.imperialpalace.com I have tried to check the rates for you, but the site is not opening for me at the moment. There is a monorail station at the IP and MGM so very easy to move between them.
You could also try Bill's Gambling Hall and Saloon, but it only has 200 rooms so may be full, Flamingo or Bally's, but I think they will be more expensive than the Riv.
** Edit - I have checked the IP again and it looks like it's full as it's giving a link to Bill's. The total for Bill's for the 5 nights is $619.75, £320 + 9% tax. You are there over a very busy weekend which pushes the rates right up.
I can't see you getting anything cheaper than the Riviera with it being a weekend if cost is your main criteria.
On http://www.harrahs.com the Flamingo is coming in at $580 = £290. It's in a good location, opposite Caesars Palace, and you could catch the monorail at either the IP or Bally's/Paris or it would be about a 30 minute walk to the MGM.
I wouldn't worry about a pool as it won't be warm enough to swim in December, but the Flamingo does have an excellent pool.

Standard Tower Room $495+tax
or
Widescreen Tower Room $595+tax
If you need the promo code please let me know.
We stayed at the Excalibur for 4 nights in 2006 and loved it. Sure it isn't as nice as some of the other strip properties but if budget is important but you still want the Vegas experience, it is a great option.
Standard Room, $61, $61, $151, $171 & $51
Widescreen Room, $81, $81, $171, $191 & $71.
For a fight weekend those prices seem very good to me.
12/5 $69.99 12/6 $79.99
12/7 $209.99 12/8 $229.99
12/9 $79.99
SubTotal: $669.95
Sahara $314 (accessible directly from MGM by monorail). Sahara website
5$50, 6 $50, 7$83, 8$83, 9$48
TRIPRES:-
Monte Carlo (next to NYNY which is opposite MGM).
Wed $90 Thu$90 Fri$179 Sat$239 Sun$79 Average Rate $136
Flamingo
Wed$68 Thu$68 Fri$175 Sat$185 Sun$68
Tropicana (next to MGM) - this isn't the nicest but probably acceptable.
Wed$57 Thu$57 Fri$144 Sat$166 Sun$49
Average Rate $95
Imperial palace
Wed$50 Thu$59 Fri$140 Sat$140 Su$59 Average Rate $90
Personally I think you might be best with Excalibur if you are concerned about price, Luxor is a little bit of a trek from MGM if you're on your own, but I think there's a sort of monorail thing (not THE monorail, like their own).
Might be worth booking something through a hotel's website just now, and then keep looking for deals.
I left booking overnight an MGM Spa Suite for a Saturday night which was coming in at just $144, well the next day it was $244. Thankfully none of the other days had changed but it was a lesson in, if you see it and like it, book it.
The hotel will only take the first nights deposit and with that being a Weds night it isn't going to be much. Of course you will get that back anyway if you do decide to cancel.
I still think Excalibur is your best bet but all the options offered are good ones....yes even the Tropicana!!!!!
Let us know what you do?
Bally's $605

This compares quite well to Excalibur. Better hotel, more central, but not as close to MGM which although slightly south, it is where you prefer to be.

I find luxor to be a bit far south, but it's really not bad for the price compared to Excalibur. The deal is for a pyramid room. That might be a nice first time vegas experience for you??? I'm not sure if anyone on here has stayed there and might be able to comment???
$605 for Luxor is very good. I would probably go for that over the deal I came up with Excalibur, it's just a better property although there is some refurb going on at the moment.
Bally's is an option as well, it does get good reviews, and one couple we spoke to last time who stayed there were raving about it.
Out of the 3 I would go Luxor, Ballys and then Excalibur....but there really isn't much to choose between any of them.
C'mon WilliamRobb, where have you disappeared to? You'll miss out on all the deals if you don't get a move on.
There's just so much choice!
Remember to let us know what you decide.
Booked!
Got Excalibur (check in on 5th Dec - Checkout on 10th Dec), for £260. Thanks you guys, you are very helpfull.
I am now starting another thread about what I can buy etc, etc.
Once again, thanks all.
As I said before, not the best hotel on the strip but far from the worst, I'm sure you will have a great time.
Keep an eye out for specials at the Sherwood Forest Cafe in the Excalibur. When we were there they had a $5 steak meal available from 5pm and some others during the rest of our stay. Obviously they are trying to encourage people to stay in the hotel, or if staying elsewhere, come to the hotel but at that price the deal isn't to be sniffed at.
Have a great time.
Looking forward to your trip report and hotel review on your return.
Hope you have a great time!

Not sure if it works at excalibur or would get you that upgrade......

Found this website a while ago and I just managed to find it again. You might be in with a chance!
There's quite a funny joke post on it too!
Hope you enjoy the Excalibur............we stayed there for 14 nights and really enjoyed ourselves (in fact we've booked to return next September).
As another poster said, try the deals at the Sherwood Forest cafe (we quite like it in there and it's convenient) or even the Pyramid cafe next door in the Luxor.
Hope you have a great time
