as you've read my limited experience of Vietnam I can't help any more I'm afraid. When were you thinking of going though as that may make a difference as to what folks recommend?

If you are looking to do the beach part in 'our' summer then the weather is better in Nha Trang or maybe Hoi An, they become monsoonal in Nov - Jan so in those months I would pick Phan thiet or Mui Ne.

Kuoni do a really good Indochina brochure as do travel 2 , you can download them online I believe.

Of course I should have said our dates will be the beginning of October should we decide to go.

I was in HCMC and the Mekong Delta around the second week of October about 5 years ago and we had torrential rain for a few hours most days.

Yes looking at the weather stats October does seem to have heavy rain. However we usually go to Thailand around September October and although you do get heavy rain you also get a lot of nice weather.

I suppose the weather would have a real bearing on trips etc.

The rain didn't spoil the holiday though it was very heavy at times, I still managed to see pretty much of everything.. but I didn't spend time at the beach which could be pretty dismal if the weather isn't good.
I did enjoy Vietnam and would like to return someday to see the north of the country.
