Has any one experienced the same thing? My friend has just come back from Calangute and has reported there is a high spate of petty thefts going around on the beach especially by the sellers. They used almost the same tactics as the gyspies in Barcelona where they show a map infront of you and their other hand is left free to wander beneath the map - as seen on tv. My friend who was with two other people said they saw a woman selling saris on the beach. She approached their sunbed and flared out one of the saris. She shows the sari really close up to your face while the other hand is left free to roam about! Once she there her other two accomplices come and try and sell the same wares on the other side of the bed. After they have left my friend found out his havaiannas flipflops were gone.
A lot of this had been happening at the time and someone had reported having £250 worth of rupees stolen in this way - why carry so much? Another tactic my friend go scammed on are kids all crowding round you on both sides . He felt someone tugging at his trouser pocket but didn't feel anything taken. But when he reached inside his pocket he found out his 600 rupees had been taken. Be beware. So If you are interested in any hawker's wares on the beach make sure you secure all your valuables before she approaches and ask her to give you some space! And only 1 seller at a time.
Last week someone we know bought a copy, on the beach, of a very popular book here in Indian - when it was opened almost 50 pages were missing along with very bad printing. The next day they had words with the book seller who offered them a refund of a 1/4 of the buying price as they had taken the wrapping from the book so he could not sell it again!!!!! Needless to say a full refund was eventually returned after our friend stood up from his sun bed.
IMO all the books sold on the beach , are very poor copies, best to buy at bookshops where you will get the origional at far better prices than at home .
i think that petty theft is common everywhere, even here in jersey, i wouldnt leave anything on my sunbed while i go into the sea, its just not worth it, your things can be gone in the blink of an eye, and we have a lot of purse/handbag thefts here as well, its just a case of being aware and dont go anywhere on your own in the dark!!
If there are two of you place anything between your sunbeds, which should be close to one another. Don't leave them unattended.
In recent years I have been to places with far worse reputations and I got used to not taking designer handbags, not putting anything valuable in them and,if I have money in my bag, it is just enough for that outing. I also have had to even take off rings and leave them in a safe for the duration of the holiday and to either wear no jewellery or jewellery which doesn't even look as if its worth much. It certainly didn't put me off going- but I appreciate that even if nothing of worth is taken it would be upsetting to go through.
all this is so sad - you never used to hear of any of this going on. I would leave everything unattended whilst going for a swim, + you felt safe at night and didn't have to think to put your bag over you away from the road etc. sign of the times as they say!
has a idea stop at the cobra charmers buy there cobra put em in your bags and you will hear the scream as they drop your bag and run . just a thought.
When I visit Vagator I take 100 rps with me for the day in case I get stopped on the bike etc. my friends at Sharmilla shack always tell me to pay tommorow which is okay if you have a regular shack. She takes my bag when I go for a swim and puts it in her living quarters, so I always leave her a small tip every day with which she is always more than happy with.
