Ongoing from the shacks topic, just wondering what attracts you to a particular shack? Is it because its quiet, lively, the staff, family run, the prices and menu (probably), service, music they play, free sunbeds, the beach sellers, OR of course their loos - could be some or all of things - as it is with us..........so just wondering
Ours is Petes shack, Calangute, nothing spectacular, quiet and plays "gentle back ground" music, family run and we have seen the kids grow up, friendly, same beach sellers and massage lady year on year, food good, prices reasonable, toilet ok (but maybe could be improved, better than when they had NO toilet), free sunbeds - this is our choice.
Another choice is Big banana at Baga - similar in the family, staff and friendly aspects - pretty much the opposite of the coin where sunbeds are concerned (wall to wall) , more on offer really but we do enjoy both.
What is it that attracts you?
Fizz xx
Hi fizz,i would have to say ours is the big banana,we have tried a couple of others but always end going back, the food is consistantly good as is the service also we love the music they play(a lot of reggae),but i think the main reason would have to be familiar faces and friends we have made over the years, in saying that i think we will try some of the other shacks recommended on here,Ganesh shinnig star and bono`s keep being mentioned so will give them a try in feb.xx
I'm a fan of the Big banana also, although I have the same thing everytime i go.. Steak Burger and Chips - 110 Rs, simply gorgeous and a perfect price, you get lots of tender meet and just fills you up, Some of the volunteers have been using the beach restaurant (not really a shack as it's more permanent, Brittos in Baga, they do some good tandoor there, although slightly higher priced, but good constant food, although there desserts look nicer than they are, still nice but they look fabulous!
Beat me to to it Rob, Big Banana = steak or chicken burger for lunch or chateaubriaind in the evening.. ..TGI Friday = TGI Breakfast or Aloo gobi with baby corn and mushroom jalfrazi.. .. Xaviers = Chicken tikka and roti's that we make into a wrap.. :tup. I can't go on as I keep dribbling on the key board
Peace and quiet, and away from the crowds a bit. I quite like a mix of nationalities in terms of other customers as well. And of course, good food.
Just back from 2 weeks 5* Adult only luxury in the Dominican Republic.
My OH has a week off late November and I just could not help booking a week.
Will let you all know if Rovers Return is as good as last March.
Oh my poor credit card.
Papa
Sorry but............. sand , not for me, poolside every time !
I always used to be like you I loved the pool. In Goa though its that whole beach atmosphere that gets you.It is amazing.
Papa
Agree with you Papa, any where else in the world we would normally be pool side people but in Goa you would miss out on so much by not going to the beach and useing the shacks and of course that is what upsets the hoteliers
We are all different of course, and that's just my preference ! Have fun whereever you choose to spend your day. cheers Dave
With us a clean toilet hopefully means a clean kitchen. Favourite this year was Fishermans Shack and we were luck to get a bed most days!
I think its funny to see a shack with all the sunbeds full & next door can empty, people attaract people,
Its the location, food, service that attracts us
people attaract people,
How very true ! We might walk past an empty restaurant on the grounds that the food might not be up to scratch. An empty bar on the other hand isn't a problem if you are having a bottle of beer. Once they have one customer you can guarantee more will follow quickly. If I owned a shack I would hire people to sit there when needed !!

Me Me ME I want that job
Goa is the only place I ever sit on a beach. I usually hate the sand. Regarding shacks I usually go to nearest to where our hotel is. Last year we used Oceanic as were near the top end of Baga. This year we are near Titos road so will probably use one near there. Any recomendations near there by the way
We use the Bistro at Baga. Food is excellent. We meet up with the same people every year to "catch up". Plus, we have watched the lads who work there and look after us so well grow from young children to men! I call them "My boys" !
When we go in Jan I will deffo try Big Banana - this year went to Bobby's virtually next one, but found the sunbeds not comfortable, and spent most of the time at the Oceanic in Baga. On the last day I walked down the beach past the Big Banana and was well impressed by the menu, a better choice than Oceanic, about time we tried somewhere different. Roll om Jan 13th!!
i agree with dave wales.the beach really isnt for me,its poolside everytime, food and drink at hand from courtious staff who dont keep hasselling you to buy stuff you dont need or want.when we do go to the beach its a trip up to ashvem or morjim, the hawkers are kept at bay by the shack staff.absolute bliss
Polite and efficient service from the lads at the shack. I even enjoyed a little "banter" with "One-leg", a beggar that sits close to the beach entrance.
And of course great security from Uncle who enjoys the sport of "Chase the Beach Seller"

Loved those photo's! We stayed at the MD for many years. In fact i think where the corner of the bar is being replaced, is where i used to put my handbag!!
