sleezy............... :really we have been going to marmaris for 10 years now and yes it has changed in those years but i wouldn't call it sleezy if you want the kareoke bars, english breakfasts, and maccy d's they are there but you can also find the Turkish eateries

if you keep to the old town near the marina area then in my opinion this is nicer, icmeler is only about 5 miles away and thats lovely with a nicer beach than marmaris. sadly i think a few people have given marmaris a bad reputation and some of the british people that go there make you feel ashamed to be british, maybe thats why you heard its sleazy

Just about sums it all up ellie meg

I would never use the word sleazy to describe Marmaris personally

No its not sleazy but i could think of nicer places to go, depends on your age ?
If your young, just want to do the rounds of clubs and bars then maybe you will love it.

Saying that, there are some nicer parts typically Turkish. Icmeler is next door and i personally think this is the best option, loads to do and nice beach front to walk along at night, why not go there and then take alook at Marmaris, its only a short bus ride away.

Where ever you decide the people are great, cant do enough for you and will make you very welcome

Sleezy is quite a subjective opinion really. One persons idea of sleezy, might be someone elses idea of a lively, fun place with a lot going on in it.

Hopefully I will find it's the latter doepsmc ;) We are going for a week October half term. I booked it as I got a really good price staying at the Grand Azure which has very good reviews as a belated 40th birthday pressie by 2 years lol. We had to cancel the original holiday then due to hubby's hernia op so are all off here. The hotel's supposed to be of a high standard but I thought the lively resort would suit ok as we'll be taking our 4 kids aged 6-11.

It depends what you are looking for.
If you want somewhere brash and loud, very busy and with lots of shopping, bars and restaurants of all types you will love it.
It is very popular with lots of English people, so it obviously has something to offer.
As a previous poster said the area around the harbour is very nice, quite picturesque and with a castle.
If you are looking for a quieter, more authenic resort there are lots to choose from Akyaka, Turunc, Dalyan and somewhere in between is Icmeler, which is quite big but a bit more upmarket than Marmaris.

I would not say it was sleazy either , just agreeing with elli megs other points.

Hi {a,[;empse,

The Grand Azure is a lovely hotel, mpre tpwards Icmeler. My friends have stayed there a few times and last year we visited them there. We had a look at their room which was a sea view and quite luxurious, the whole hotel had that de=lixe feel about it, the pool was lovely and we had a snack overlooking the sea -really nice. As we had a heatwave that June the AC was brilliant all inside the hotel.

I think you will like it there. Our friends used to get the dolmus into Icmeler each night to see us., then catch the last one back around 12.45

i havent said its sleazy either i said due to some of the people it attracts maybe thats why hes heard its sleazy. i love marmaris out of season such a different place and the scenery across from the old town is lovely, but icmeler is nicer

I wouldn't call it sleazy either ...but I would liken it to Blackpool (without the lights & donkeys but with the sun LOL ;) ) - NOT that there is anything wrong with Blackpool - lots of people love Blackpool and its lively atmosphere..........but whether Blackpool is your ideal holiday destination is a matter for you.

Grand Azur is a lovely hotel, but it is under a different hotel management as of 2007 (was Iberostar and now Martim).........so can't comment on what it is like today.

I love Marmaris been going for nine years with my son, just the girls and last couple of times with partner and son, theres so much to do the bar street is very lively but has a promanade which has family bars too not nearlly as lively as Bodrum. Ichmeler is really nice and quieter and just a Dolmus away. Going to try Oludeniz this year though.

Thanks BarbH and jdybnsn for the comments about the Grand Azure, feeling quite reassured now :)

I was a little concerned that it may be a little stuffy for the children, but the pool looks good and there's an indoor one too just in case the weather's a bit hit and miss. They're very well behaved at the table and not at all fussy so I have no qualms there but they do like something to watch in the evening so I was hoping to find places to go after dinner with that in mind. The hotel only appears to have a piano bar and there not quite that refined ;) I opted for it as I got really good prices for October half term for the two rooms and figured they were having their main holiday at Aqua Fantasy which seems ideal for them so this was my little belated birthday treat!

Can you tell me how long it takes and how much to get to Iclemer please?

icmeler is only about 5 miles away and is cheap on a dolumus but we found taxis were expensive from icmeler to marmaris so didnt use them

Hi

Marmaris is not sleezy we were there for the 1st time last year and loved it so much we are booked up to go back in september i thought it was one of the best holiday i have ever had the people are great the food is cheap, there are endless numbers of bars along the beach that are just fab i can't wait to return you'll love it :)

I'm also going to marmaris in september in which i have never been, my husband and i usually go to gumbet, bodrum, which we love. Anyone who has been there will know that it is quite quiet and good for relaxing and doing excursions. This year we are looking to do something completely different and was told that marmaris is more lively which sort of scares me in a way because although we are young thirtysomethings, we don't fancy getting involved with any 18 to 30 wild parties with younger people running about causing havoc although i don't grudge anyone enjoying their holiday, i just don't want it spoiling my holiday.
I guess what i want to know is, are there good excursions to go on and is marmaris and the lunamar apts the right choice for us or have i made a big mistake? :que

Well i`ve never seen any wild 18-30 partys running about...First went wen i was 34 and it suits me to the ground.

Plenty going on but not really in an in your face type of way if you know what i mean.

As for excursions you will have loads to choose from.
I think Marmaris sounds like the right choice couldn`t comment on the Lunamar as i`ve never stayed there

Hope my ramblings are of some use to you :cheers
