I've been going to India for many years now and the flight takes you over some incrediblly awesome landscapes the on board monitor gives very little information of what's down there so my question is does anyone know of a app or devise that can tell you in detail of where exactly you are and other interesting information

For an app to work it would need access to a 3G signal- which whilst flying is either expensive and limited to a handful of operators only one or two fly to India or not possible. The return on investment for an app wouldn't be very good.
It won't tell you exactly where you are and you will need to do some of the work yourself but there is a device that will help you identify where you are flying over. Those of us of a certain age call these things a 'Map'
