Having been a fan of the Greek islands since my late teens early twenties (Rhodes/Falaraki & Crete/Malia), i've been going to the more relaxed resorts with my girlfriend over the pas few years. We've not had a bad holiday yet and I wondered if anybody could help me out as we're now looking again for 2006. Below is where we've been and what we've thought.
2002 - Corfu/Sidari
This was our first holiday together and was fantastic. The coves made for great scenery and day trips to Corfu town were great fun. Enough night life in Sidari to keep us busy in the evening, though it was a little English. Bus trips to Corfu Town made sure that I didn't get bored sitting on a sun lounger all week.
2004 - Santorini/Kamari
This holiday felt a bit more grown up. The beach wasn't great as it was pebbly and windy, but the single stretch of road that constituted the resort felt very cosmopolitan. All the bars/tavernas had only greek staff. We went in May so there were a couple of livlier bas that weren't open but this made for a more relaxed holiday. Again Day trips to the capital (can't think what it was called) made for a good day out. I learnt some Greek for this trip (more than the usual tourist hello/goodbye) which was very much appreciated when used.
2005 - Kos/Tingaki
Nice resort spread out a bit more than Kamari. This was a cross between the two previous resorts in terms of bars/tavernas. Still quite relaxed though and just enough to do to keep us busy. Again day trips to Kos Town and visting the ruins made for some good scenary and kept us busy. My Greek had progressed by now and I was supprised to hear that I was the first English person the sunbed lady had heard request a sunbed in Greek.
We're looking for something the same, where the resort isn't too big, but has enough to do during the day/evening, with the option of jumping on a bus to go somewhere nearby for 1 or 2 days of the week. Any recomendations would be greatly apreciated.
pojo
Based on where you've been before Parga, Nidri on Lefkas, Lindos or Pefkos on Rhodes, Molyvos on Lesbos or Lassi on Kefalonia would probably fit the bill. All these places still retain their 'Greekness' but aren't 'one horse towns' as my other half says, ie, they all have a big enough selection of bars and tavernas to keep you entertained at night.
Zante - Laganas
Santorini - Kamari
Kefalonia - Lassi
Skiathos - Town
Plenty of restaurants and bars, one bus route taking you to a different beach each day. We've chosen to go back to Zante next year, but we'll def return to Skiathos.
Cejay
Skiathos for the beaches and to watch the sun set over the pelion, or Lakka on Paxos if you want to hire a boat and find a deserted cove and listen to the ciccadas ...
I would suggest:
my family and i went to samos with simply travel {part of thomsons} off the beaten track.superb island nobody about . very relaxing .recomended.
Thanks for all your suggestions. We will be looking through the brochures this weekend.
