will my small changes do the planet any good?

As they say at Asda, every little helps. It's not what any single person does that maters, it's the cumulative effect of everyone. If everyone did what you did (I'm one of them!), even though emissions are still high, they are lower than what they would have been. Many european countries are light years ahead of us so to keep on topic, travelling to europe for christmas / new year may offset your emissions from being here!!
