Had a family holiday in Cyprus and although the hotel was excellent, the staff and people were friendly and the weather was of course sunny was not that impressed with Cyprus.
The beach was small, cramped and very dirty
Is Crete better, if so where for a family with two boys 12 and 10. Would be looking at 4 or 5 star hotels with a very good pool being very high on the list.
Thanks all
Look at the following website as a suggested hotel

I can thoroughly recommend this hotel.
Crete every time!
If you want a good pool, the Louis Creta Princess has a great one. But you need to check the resort to see if it suits you as Maleme is a bit of a one horse town. We loved it but we did have a car for a week. Platanais (10mins) and Chania(30mins & where you fly to) are both close.
sorry folks off to Crete in two weeks.. a price thing would have preferred Cyprus but too expensive. of the Greek islands we prefer Kos
Off to crete in 3 weeks, again definately would have prefered Cyprus but it was the price thing ( cyprus very very expensive)

I used to work in Rethymnon on the West side of Crete and loved it!
Lovely beac which stretches for miles and miles, lovely old town and lots of places to visit plus Samaria Gorge, the mountains, the rugged South coastline...... love it!
I got married in Ayia Napa so i guess thats why i have a soft spot for Cyprus! We stayed in Nissi Beach area. I went to Zante a few years ago and hated it, so if i dont enjoy crete i think i will cross Greece off my list .. lol

Where are the good beaches on Cyprus? Is Nissi Beach the place to go?
I liked the mountains but was disappointed with the beaches and the lack of Cypriot atmosphere. Paphos was full of Irish Bars and Italian Restaurants and Protaras had small cramped beaches backed by family hotels and a neon strip of Karaoke Bars.
Hope you like Crete.
Noushkey, we're thinking of Rethymnon for next year among other places, we love Crete but haven't been to the west yet.
You will have to land for a brief (20 minute) stop in Istanbul as no direct flights are yet allowed, although there are signs that this may change quite shortly.
It's still interesting driving on the left and seeing British GR or even VR postboxes!
Well worth hiring a car and trying the deserted double motorway down to Famagusta. I shall definitely go again.
We stayed at the Annabelle Village, described as 5 star/deluxe in some brochures (its not!! more like 3star plus/4 star - but still a nice hotel with lovely gardens and pools and right on the beach).
Looking forward to tomorrow and the 30th and will let you all know how they compare IMHO when I get back.
I have no Greek based desire to return. Kos does have a good view of Turkey though!
Richard the same scenario applies in one form or another over most of modern Greece and Cyprus. let us not forget that several of the ancient Greek kingdoms are now in what is modern day Turkey, the two are historically linked.. i found the people of Kos about the friendliest of all Greeks and the island because of its history fascinating [un like many people i don't go on holiday to sit by a pool or on the beach or getting P****, ] i go for the whole cultural experience
A bit off topic but this applies to pretty much most of the eastern Mediterranean area - it's been fought over by different empires for centuries. My Dad spent a happy 6 months of his late teens on Rhodes as a National Conscript just after the war living in the Castle in Rhodes Town which had been virtually a ruin until Mussolini restored it and installed modern plumbing! Spent most of his time in the army in Egypt which was then part of the Mandate too. He was lucky his Mum had him when she did - he was too young for WW2 and too old for Korea!
You're right.....we should share a bottle of rets and......well maybe 2 and just enjoy talking about a fascinating part of the world.
Yammas!
Richard
