Its literaly a case of ..'You cant get the staff'! Saying that, i have experienced both good and poor service at home and abroad. But, on the whole youve a lot more chance of ignorant and rude service in the UK than you have on your hols.
No wonder people go abroad......ok, most of us go for the weather, but i could put up with the odd rainy day here if the service was better
We get it good when we are abroad, generaly people are polite and give you time of day, occasionally you get the odd surly person (rome!) but they are in the minority.
I'm sorry to say that it seems like it is the whole hospitality, tourism and catering industry where staff have a problem. This could be down to the low wages or stupidly long hours that they work. I have experienced at a function venue in York, i was charged three different prices for three rounds of drinks and the drinks in each round were the same. It also seems worse at an attraction where you pay an admission fee. I have also noticed that some places in this industry are ditching British workers in favour of workers from the old eastern bloc.
weve just been to Brean Sands camping and nearly all the staff in the arcades and fairground of Brean leisure Park, were from the Eastern Block, (well sounded Russian to me ).
They were nice, but didn't understand and looked very sad
I work in the leisure sector ~ In bingo.
The girls I work with can be very glum depending on if they went out the night before...
They are young and need to have a social life, but working till 11pm every night for not very good wages (5p-10p more than min wage).
We went to longleat last week and their staff were very good, apart from the catering staff who didn't say hello, please thankyou or smiled.
We thought the price of food disgusting. £3.99 for a egg mayo sandwich, £7.99 for fish and chips and you get to sit on a picnic bench to eat it
