I personally would have thought that everywhere will be quiet/quieter than usual, but according to the papers yesterday about 6 million Brits will be booking holidays in January,so who knows?

The value of the pound wont help places like Ibiza though.

I was in Es Cana last summer and found it a lot quieter than previous visits and expect it to be the same this year - not that we will be going again after 5 visits in 6 years.

12 of our family are booked for Ibiza via Thomson. We fly on 1st August to Fiesta Don Toni Hotel (Playa den Bossa) Mind you this holiday was booked a while ago.

This will be my ninth year of going to Ibiza and I cannot imagine not getting my yearly fix of Santa Eulalia!! The difference is that unlike the last two years I am going back to half board in a hotel. Self catering last year seemed to cost a fortune and that was only eating out once a day! With the exchange rate being so bad it can only get worse this year. It will be interesting to see if the hotel is full, but Santa Eulalia always seems fairly busy and I go in June, which obviously isnt the busiest time. Enjoy!

Well we're wondering whether to go to Ibiza for the first time this year.

(First time for me, hubby went there as a teenager about 35 years ago....)

We've been to Majorca mainly for ther last 15 years, with a couple of trips to Menorca, and one to Croatia.

We are thinking of going to Santa Eulalia, which is where he went as a teenager.
The prices don't seem very good at the moment now though.......is that just New Year hype, despite the "sale" promises?

This will be our 10th visit to Ibiza over a period of quite a few years. In recent years we have been many times to Bulgaria (excellent value) and many times to Turkey.

The cost of the holiday itself to Ibiza was expensive and we are now bracing ourselves for increases in prices. Nevertheless I know we will enjoy the holiday!

We've been mainly to Greece/Cyprus the last 5 years but I'm thinking of going back to Ibiza for August 09 because I'm worried that Greece will be very quiet and although I wouldn't normally consider Ibiza in August, at least it should still be busy!!

But - I can't believe the prices for Spain compared to Greece .. i've got used to 2 weeks good quality s/c or B&B for circa £450-£500 each in greece and looking at Ibiza it's more like £650+ for same time of year. And that isn't due to the recent price increases because i can still find a good selection in crete/kos/rhodes for £500-£550 give or take.

could the fact that they're different countries have any connection with the price difference? are hotel prices the same in the uk and the usa for example?

(or maybe it's the flushing toilet supplement ;) )

we're booked up for 2 weeks at the middle of august.

Obviously visitor numbers will be down, but its not like you're going to be faced with a ghost town! :rofl

only thing thats gonna be a killer is club entry /tickets whichw as already expensive

Huh ? Of course they're different countries, :que

I went to Ibiza about 6-7 times from 1997-2002 as well as odd trips to Greek islands and the difference in price for a 2 week package was only 5-10% more for Ibiza.. but now it's more like 40-50% more than Greece, so Ibiza has gotten relatively more expensive!

As someone else said previously, everywhere will be relatively quiet this year, especially those resorts where the Euro is the currency.

However, I think a lot of people compare prices with previous years, rather than with prices at home. I could still take you to bars where a bottle of San Miguel is 1 Euro. Now although that was less that 70 pence last year, it's still under a quid right now and that's cheaper than any bar I know at home.

I'll be in Ibiza again this year, as I have been for the past 23 years. I love the place and would hate to miss it, even for one year. Having said that, I do go more than one holiday each year, and don't know if I would still go to Ibiza if it was my only holiday in a year. It's nice to see other places as well.

it's worth remembering that around 75% of ibiza's visitors do NOT come from the pound zone. it's also worth noting that the countries within the euro zone all have different costs of living and that the price of a pint, a hotel room, a car, a 3 bedroom house, and the average weekly wage will be different from country to country.

interestingly, ryanair's decision to run 3 x weekly flights from ibiza to london has come up trumps. flights are packed with spanish on their way to formerly fancy london town to buy up the sales and take advantage of the cheap ale!!

Well I've bitten the bullet now..... booked for 2 weeks in August :cheers :cheers

It has cost more than I thought compared to Greece but not that bad a deal all in all.......and I've not been back to Ibiza since 2002 and I fancy one more trip :cheers

Hi, I think the credit crunch will have a major affect on the majority of european destinations, however, from a young males point of view I think the atmosphere will still very much be alive in the summer 2009.
Ibiza is the ultimate for younger people/Clubbers (and old alike) but the majority of us youngsters do not have a care in the world for the credit crunch and will save like crazy to get 10 days in Ibiza in the summer. Without mortgages and families, all of our money is on living the ultimate party holiday!!!! June 22nd-3rd July... cant wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

me and my family are off to ibiza in july for 2 weeks and were staying in san antonio bay.
we have been to ibiza 6 times previously and have noticed that attendance at kiddies funparks and funpubs have dwindled in recent years. i know some places have shut and we are extremely worried that there could be more closures if numbers are down.

my kids are 11 and 4 and have always loved the funpark facilities at night.

so does anyone know what the score is as im sure numbers will be down due to the weak pound against the euro and the global economy being so poor at present.

Hi All
Went on a split holiday last September / October. The first week was in Ibiza, San Antonio Bay and the second week was at Magaluf, Majorca.
We were A/I in both resorts, but the supermarket costs of food and alcohol were much more expensive in Ibiza.
With the pound near parity to the euro it would seem good sense to go at least half board to a hotel this year.

I'm going over in June and, to be honest, I fear the worst. Numbers have dwindled over the years I've been going to the island and I can't see that trend reversing this year with so many people avoiding destinations where the Euro is used.

My big fear is for Spanish friends who have bars and restaurants there. Making a living has always been hard enough, with only a six month tourist season to live off for most resorts, but I suspect that even more people thatn usual will go All-Inclusive this year, or possibly even self-catering and eat in the apartment at night.

Add those last two threats to the already dwindling numbers and it doesn't paint a rosy picture.

i'm not sure why you use the word dwindling? here are the official tourist numbers for ibiza.

2008 2,093,905
2007 2,214,364
2006 1,870,235
2005 1,763,024
2004 1,795,178
2003 1,670,443
2002 1,678,600
2001 1,740,455

the proportion of non euro zone (ie british) visitors dwindles every year, but for 75% (or more) of island visitors there will be no adverse currency effects. on the island itself, hotel prices have been maintained at last year's levels and restaurant owners are saying that there will be no increase from them either.
