IT`S OPEN..... AT LAST, THE NEW ZANTE AIRPORT IS OPEN. IT IS OPEN FOR DEPARTURES ONLY FOR THE TIME BEING SO WE WILL STILL BE ARRIVING INTO THE OLD AIRPORT.
ALSO, THE BUS STATION IN ZANTE TOWN HAS MOVED FROM THE TOWN CENTRE TO A NEW BUILDING JUST OUTSIDE OF TOWN.

The new arrivals hall has been open for about two years. The departures has now opened which is great news for all of us visitors.

I've seen some photos Brian and it looks good, clean, bright and modern, not something you see very often in a Greek Airport. I'm a regular to Zante and its going to be a lovely experience this summer not to a. que outside in high temps to check in and b. to find a seat once we are in 
But even if the new departures wasn't open it wouldn't put me off, I just love Zante, Greece and the Greek people.

Word of warning.
No liquids were being allowed through security at passport control when we returned yesterday.
We did not find this out until we had checked in our cases and I had to hand over the only bottle of drink I bought as I had in in my hand luggage.
Prices for food and drink are very expensive (as most aiports are) 2 glasses of juice and 1 roll 14 euro
People sitting next to us paid 25 euro for 2 teas and 2 coffee's
They could do with a few more seats in departure lounge. I think that the ones that are there have been brough over from the old terminal.
There was only one scanning machine working when we went into airport and everyone had to queue there first to have cases scanned before getting to check in desk.

no liquids in hand baggage until you are through to departures is the same rule it has been for the last 18 months throughout All Europe..
all the scanners worked last Friday [it may be a staffing problem]
AND YOU CAN SMOKE upstairs in the snack bar area

I really can't understand how people do not know that liquids are banned in hand luggage until through departures throughout Europe. Do they not know what countries are in Europe or do they just not read the details that come with the tickets or the details on various websites.
There really is no excuse for this nowadays.

I didnt realise the no liquid rule was all over Europe I thought it was just a UK thing. This was our first holiday to a EU country for a few years.
There were a few people caught out and had to leave things.

there was a woman behind me with with 3 or 4 bottles of expensive vodka ,whilst chatting she mentiond she had them in her hand bag, i told her they would be confiscated so she hastily swapped a few itens from her case and put the bottles on top I dont know if they made it back to the uk in one peice, but i must say there are enough notices at the airport about what can and cant be carried aboard, but its something about us brits that we never read them

i am so pleased to here that the new departure area is open. we are re-visiting zante in september, we last went 2 years ago and the toilets in that airport (the ones reached via the spiral stairs for those in the know...) are the only public toilets i have been in in that have physically made me wretch, i crossed my legs for 2 hours prior to the flight departing rather than using them, they were truly vile. this would never ever put me off returning to the island though, but i suppose we are only a couple, i can fully understand why people with children find these standards of facilities unacceptable...
Oh the toilets in the old one were so so bad. Down the spiral staircase to hell. Tip that did work in the old airport and hopefully in the new one was to buy coke, biscuits from the duty free. They used to sell a six pack of coke for around 3 euros which was cheaper than going to the cafe stall and buying one.

I hated the trail and smell down to the old toilets, the new ones are okay I think they have them upstairs as well as ground level. I dont know what they will look like by the time you go in Sept.
They are a big step up from the original hole in the ground toilet
