We stayed at Alykes, but visited Zante town one evening.
The Church of St Dennis was nice to visit and see. The shopping area was good, and there is a lovely big harbour.
The bars were O.K. but, stay clear of Village Inn on the front of the town / city, What a rip-off ! (stay away) !
Plenty of daily trips were available for reasonable charges.
We stayed in Avra 1, in room 1 - after 3 nights we asked to be moved, as there was no daylight in the room, and we were unable to dry our wet swimming gear and towels etc. Also, there was a leak in the toilet, and it wasn't water that we had to paddle through in the middle of the night ! It was definitely pee !
We were moved to the second floor, and this room was a lot better, and included a long 2 sided balcony.
Our travel company was Olympic. The rep was very poor. The flight company was Alexandair - very basic flights, poor food - and, they managed to forget to load 113 suitcases on the plane for our return journey from Zante to Manchester !
Suitcases arrived 10 days later !!!
We didn`t like it very much in Zante town, especially in the shops, it was impossible to stop and look at aything without someone at your elbow trying to persuade us to buy. In the end we didn`t buy anything in the town, all our souvenirs came from Alikes or villages we visited. We went on a coach trip around the island, stopping at a communal village, where everyone made rugs or tablecloths and mats, and they all shared the revenue from the sale of goods. Everything was spread out over walls and fences and over clothes lines on display, and we were even invited into someone`s house to look at goods that weren`t on display outside.

The goods on sale are not generally made in these villages but are imported. I remember going into a shop in Zante Town and an old woman telling us she had made all the tablecloths etc by hand! If she lived to be a thousand she would have struggled.
Looks like we were sucked in, then. Never mind, the thought was nice at the time.
didnt like Zante town very much shops expensive and restaurant staff practically dragging you in the door
