Ananda Cottages is a bit of a misnomer. This is a smallish resort having three pools and a spa, specialising in spa and yoga (and similar)activities about 30 minutes stroll (much uphill!) or 5 minutes by car from the centre of Ubud.
It backs on to paddy fields and indeed also has paddy fields within its grounds and the views from some of the accommodation are very pleasant and relaxing.
There is also a programme of activities, Batik, Cooking, Carving, Dancing, Walking, Painting and a very professional Spa, outwith the main grounds. The Spa is reasonably priced, very clean and professional providing a range of treatments, including for couples and sunset packages.
I would rate the breakfast as quite poor, although adequate. We have had dinner there, on a previous occasion, and the main meal was far better - though nothing to rave about. There are a couple of good restaurants locally, including Indus (recommended) almost opposite the entrance, which provide far superior meals and service.
The accommodation ranges through older style typical rooms, bungalows (some with outside shower), to more modern rooms (ours was very stylish, on an upper floor, with four poster, air con and beautiful double aspect views over the paddies / trees and over a small pool). Suites are also available. I believe that all accommodation has a fan and air-conditioning.
There is little to do in the evenings, so a trip to a local restaurant or to take in some dance and entertainment in Ubud is recommended.
The staff are very willing, although sometimes their grasp of English is not as great as can be found in the larger coastal hotels.
We have now had two visits, just for some relaxation in Ubud, and believe that this accommodation offers good value and comfort. We would rate the Bliss Spa, in particular, as providing excellent value and service.
This is a personal opinion, based upon our last visit and we would return.
