Set in a back street about 600m from the town centre, this hotel is officially marked as 4*. We booked up a two night weekend break at what turned out to be a very good rate compared with their published prices, and even the receptionist expressed some surprise.
The main clients, apart from business people, are UK & US tourists visiting the WW1 war graves in the area. It's conveniently situated for this.
We arrived on a wet Friday Afternoon, parked the car in the smallish car park at the rear, and were greeted by a large alsatian dog. It didn't bark, but I found it threatening (I'm not overkeen on dogs). Once installed in the hotel it followed us to our room - ground floor.
A twin room (we'd asked for a double), it wasn't huge. Heating contol on the heater - no thermostat on the wall. Old TV, has BBC1 & 2. Clock with flat battery. It felt shabby, but that could have been because of the small window and dim lighting. Non-locking loo door, with loo rather close to the toilet paper dispenser (I had to lean left when sitting).
No tea or coffee facilities in the room.
Breakfast cereals were adequate but from Lidl's (I recognised the very chewy meusli). Coffee was instant. Rolls rather small, but you could have as many as you want, of course.
Our stay was not exactly improved by the party of British Squaddies staying (I guess on oficial business) - phone calls to the room at 1:30am with a drunken person trying to find their freind eventually caused us to disconnect the 'phone.
One redeeming feature - out the front door, turn right, then left at the traffic lights, and after 200m you get to a good cafe - 't Heksenkotje' - a 'talk cafe' for chatting and board games if you like - a great line in herb teas (people were coming in at 11:00pm for herb tea and no alcohol!) and a lovely 'test bed of gin' - 6 different types of gin to taste.
