I am currently based in Bangkok and I went to Cambodia for a mission (French doctors). Friends of mine told me about the Pavillon Indochine. I stayed there after work to visit the temples during week end.

This hostel is just fabulous.

Qs I din't recognise the description of my friends the boss (former journalist) told me they have changed maybe things and now have extended the old house with brand new rooms... And a swimming pool. For very reasonable price (25 to 35 USD).

The room I stayed has a personal insafe, air con, mosquito's net and en-suite bathroom with a private terrace in the garden.

Garden is great and many places to relax. Aroma Massage is unique as well, very relaxing after a day exploring temples.

As for me I found food very good and buffet breakfast is original and very tasteful (different kind of tea, home made jam...)... Restaurant is around the pool, wooden floor, antic furniture.

Room and around are very clean.

Staff is very very friendly.

Of course this hotel is not located in town. It is why it has so much charm. But for those who comes to visit Angkor it is very good to be close to temples. And town is not far at all from there. Siem Reap is a very thiny city with not much attractive stuff. So hotel location is very good for natures lovers and don't fit needs of people who loves to feel the bustle and hustle of every city...

I will of course go back there soon as I will travel again to Siem Reap. I wanted to tell all the good things about this place, the staff and the owner. It is just some kind of place that make me feel alive because very close with nature...

This hotel was recommended to us by an ex-colleague of mine who had visited Cambodia twice before. We booked direct with the owner via e-mail. It lacks many of the amenities of the mainstream hotels within Siem Reap itself, but has some key advantages:-

- Price: It is very cheap, but as a result don't expect 4* luxury!

- Location: It is located half-way between Angkor Wat and Siem Reap, so early-risers can beat the coach-parties.

- Staff: The owner is a very passionate French ex-journalist who covered "the troubles" and stayed in the country. He was very happy to arrange a car and driver (their own, I believe), and a guide (freelance), at $20/day each (See resort review for explanations, but in short this was invaluable to us). He was also very happy to talk to his guests of an evening, to share his passion for the country and his increasing fears for the direction tourism is taking in Cambodia.

The hotel itself is in the style of a colonial French "maison", with wooden flooring and shutters, very simple and simplistic - it is a very "authentic" way to stay in Cambodia, but you have to ignore the odd spider (only UK-size and type) that appears in the thatched roofing of the bathroom, and the odd mossie that also appears. There is aircon though, and full mossie-nets for the beds. But being honest we spend all of our days out-and-about, bar a 2-hr siesta when it was hottest. So the spartan nature of the hotel was largely irrelevant.

Breakfast though was disappointing - bread, marmalade and juice. You would probably be better off going to one of the "restaurants" opposite Angkor Wat to start your day off (which were actually rather good, by Cambodian standards - don't expect the same level of cuisine as in Thailand, this IS still a 3rd-world country!).
