We have just returned on Jan 23rd 2013 from an early on a Sunwing flight, I have to admit the flight to Cayo Coco then en route to Cayo.
Guillermo was a pleasure as we descended the cold skies of Winnipeg, Manitoba in Canada we were treated like royalty as we sipped a champagne just after take-off. Throughout the flight all passengers were well taken care off. A tasty dinner of tender chicken and rice or the alternative of pasta. Delicious for a reheated meal. Great service continued with wine with meal , snacks and drinks (extra $ for alcohol), hot towelettes prior to meal, and tasty mints just before landing at Jardines del Rey airport in Cayo Coco.
All passengers were quickly ushered through immigration, to baggage area for luggage and onto buses to resorts. Keep in mind if you want to exchange to pesos at airport people are waiting for you to board onto the buses to resorts. We chose to wait till the next am at Villa Cojimar (pronounced Cohima as we learnt!) Money can be exchanged 24 hours at the reception at Cojimar.
Once on bus we were entertained by the knowledgeable tour guide and skilled driver on the sometimes bumpy roads. Wish we could recall tour guides name! He was a hard working young man. We did leave a tip of $5 to both as once we arrived at resort passengers were told to go to recepcion and await their baggage, service is included but considering it was around 215 am we were impressed with their stamina as both had been at work since early the previous am and had to return that morning for 7 am!
Once we showed our reservation paper at reception we were and given a key to our room(works or safe too) and a guide map with info on resort.
A bellboy took our luggage & us onto a golf cart style vehicle and we were in our fab ocean view room in no time. (of course we tipped him $5 as well in Canadian $).
Can't say enough about the staff at Cojimar, they were tremendously helpful and willing to please. Our maid, Lisbe, was superb in keeping our room clean as a whistle; we left her several gifts and handed pesos to her personally. Lovely towel art & fresh flowers in the bathroom, such a sweetie.
On our first morning we awoke to the sound of the waves, the sound of many birds and a sunrise on the ocean that words cannot describe. During our stay we saw all but 2 sunrises! As we walked out onto our patio doors only a few steps away was the soft white sand and the turquoise waters of the Atlantic. We have many photos to choose a sunrise to print and place onto a poster board to hang in our home.
Being our 3rd trip to Cuba we had opted for a more peaceful location. Previously travelled to Varadero to the Tryp (now a Melia) and to Guardalavaca to Club Amigo. Both great resorts but busy all the time. Being a lovely resort of just over 200 rooms Cojimar is not overcrowded and there is always a sun bed available on the each any time of day. We used the high back chairs from our patio for great back support. The grounds are lovely and renos were occurring as a fence was being erected at kid’s pool, trees cut down at kids club to allow more light indoors and painters were working hard to freshen up the columns in the gardens near the pool area near the end of our 2nd week. I'm an avid gardener and took pride in watching gardeners spruce up the grounds near the pool and at the front entrance (Julio the gardener is a sweetie when you can have a conversation in 1/2 English and 1/2 Espanola it just makes your morning even brighter as he is always smiling.
Melissa is one of the many maids that cleans the common areas and bathrooms from early am till late afternoon, we talked with her and she is a real sweetie. We made sure both received gifts from us.
The staff in the buffet are awesome, make sure you tip them early in your stay as you will receive a great table, quick coffee and drink service etc, as they show their appreciation towards tourists. All the varieties of food is amazing as I'm sure if it was not for all the walks along the beach and swimming we would have gained a few pounds!
Whoever says the Cuban food is bland has not experienced our trips to such a lovely island. Cojimar also has 2 a la cartes that can be reserved with a lady near reception (between 9 and 11 am only for reservations), there is no limit to how many reservations you make as it is a smaller resort and willing to accommodate to tourists tastes.
Also keep in mind you can dine at any resort in Cayo Guillermo, there are 5 in total, we did try a few for a different view of Cayo Guillermo but were still settled with the peace and service at Cojimar restaurants. Snacks of grilled sandwiches, grilled veggies, burgers and hot dogs were available at pool bar and in evening grilled sandwiches at the lobby bar. All the amenities are within close proximity and you'll never have an empty plate or an empty drink (bring along your bubbas or travel mugs unless you’re ok with a small plastic cup for your beverages).
The lobby bar quickly became our favourite place to relax, have a drink watch the Cuban musicians, dance, meet people from all over the world and at a quiet time we'd play a few card games. The staff working at the lobby bar Hemingway are top notch. At any time you return your previous order would be remembered and refilled promptly even if it was so busy. Spanish coffee in the morning became a favourite of ours and the bartender was ever so sweet to give us the upmost of service. Tips of pesos were given by us to them day and night.
We did not have the opportunity to meet the general manager of the resort (Eddwin) as a few times we asked and he was either on a day off or busy, but we did email to him prior to our arrival and received return emails regarding our choice of room. We had reviewed several sites for the best rooms near the ocean and received an amazing room. We recommend for quiet away from the pool bar and theatre rooms 69-78 in the older style concrete ocean view bungalows. We met a couple of people who did stay in the newer wooden bungalows that were dark and the walls thin so not too much privacy. So happy with our choice. I can't seem to say enough of this fab resort, a total tranquil tropical experience it was & will be again as we definitely will return.
WOW the review is long but we just want to assist others in their vacation choice.
BELISSIMO Cojimar.

The beach setting is as close to the Maldives as you can get but at a fraction of the cost.
The pool area is good but needs to be cleaned far better.the pool bar staff are great but serve so slowly and every thing in plastic cups.
The restaurant is clean the food is bearable for one week second week I just had breakfast and burgers dinner time toasties in the late afternoon.
The refurbished villas are clean and located in beautiful gardens ours were close to the beach.
The staff and reception management are the most helpful kind people you will ever come across.however due to being owned by the cuban government their hands are tied so they can do little to eradicate problems because higher management do nothing to help.
There is a noticeable difference between spanish owned hotels and cuban owned hotels. All said and done please understand that the Cuban people and especially the staff at Villa Cojimar are lovely caring people that live and work in a harsh enviroment.
The entertainment staff are top class and will make your holiday something to remember. If you see them practicing their dance routines you will appreciate how hard they work to put on spectacular evening dance shows.
We have stayed at the villa cojimar some five or six times we are lucky that we can have two holidays a year and because Villa Cojimar is well priced if you search hard enough. low season
