I have recently had the pleasure of staying at the Westbury Hotel Kensington. A colleague and I were booked into to stay there for the night whilst attending an exhibition at Earls Court.
The hotel was easy to find and was located about 15 minute walk from Earls Court in a nice area. Having read previous reviews for this hotel, we were worried about what we were going to find. However, upon arrival we did immediate think we had misjudged the place before even stepping foot in it. The entrance hall and reception was clean modern and very bright. The lady on reception was pleasant enough, however she did let us check in without seeing any ID at all, which I found slightly odd.
Our room was located on the ground floor just 15 feet from reception. This is where things started to go wrong. Upon opening the door we were greeted by a small entrance hall with built in wardrobes, a door through to the main room and a few holes/dents in the plasterboard walls, along with the strong smell of paint.
The room itself wasn’t horrendous; I have stayed in much worse. It was very basic though, the two beds were metal framed camp beds, with equally thin mattresses’, pushed into opposite corners of the room. Between them was a rickety small bedside table that had seen much better days – possibly 20 years ago. The radiator cover was in pieces, and these pieces were lent up against the radiator. There was a single chair in the room, the type you find in a conference room. This was in a corner, holding the parts of the broken radiator cover up. There was a small vanity unit built into the wall with tea and coffee making facilities and the only plug socket we could find. The vanity unit was covered in previous guests’ graffiti. There was a small en suite, which on the plus was very clean and looked fairly new.
Although neither myself nor my colleague were comfortable staying here, it was clean just very basic. When I told the receptionist we were checking out she waved us off with a cheery smile and went back to her phone call with her friend. I assume that guests leaving after a short stay is a regular occurrence…
