Our room at the Golden Bay was not that great, as it faced the car park to the right. Plus you had to be a size zero to get into the shower which i did laugh about with the staff. The cleaners came every day at 1015 in the morning which i thought was a bit early, if your someone who like's a lay-in like myself. The place was spotlessly clean (god bless the cleaners). We only ate there once but the food was nice and value for money. Overall we had a pleasant stay, the staff make the Golden Bay as they are all so friendly and hospitable. Yannis the bartender was a great laugh just take him with a pinch of salt.
We too found the pool very crowded so we headed down to the beach most days which was lovely. We did not attend the Greek Night as we could see it from our balcony and it didn't look that great. No plate smashing or zorba dancing. Although most people enjoyed it. All in all an enjoyable stay, i would most certainly go back to Gournes but stay somewhere else only due to the fact i very rarely stay at the same place twice.

The hotel itself is lovely but the location is not brilliant, but the staff are absolutley brill, especially Irina Yannis Yani Maria and Mary. You can get a taxi almost anywhere and they are not very expensive. The food there is lovel yand the service is great. The pool there is quite small but very nice and great for the kids as there is a very shallow end and also a deep end of 2.5 meters. There is a pool table and Internet and games room in the hotel and a lovely taverna.

The best holiday we have ever had.Very quiet and peaceful which is what we both wanted, but more lively areas 20 mins walk in either direction(hire a quad instead of walking- more fun!).Fantastic staff, really friendly and helpful.Our room looked out over the Creten sea to Dia Island, with the most beautiful sunsets. Good sized room,air con(10 eur/day),Safe deposit and TV. Kept spottless by excellent cleaning staff.Did'nt bother cooking, the food in the Hotel was too good!Great bar snacks at the pool bar and a wonderful Taverna restaurant.If you want a sunbed get your towel down early, more people than beds!! Greek dancing with free wine and more food than you could eat(25 eur p/p), Karaoke night. Thank you Rhannia,Yannis and Yanna, We will be back!

Stayed in the Golden Bay Apartments in August 2007. The apartments were very clean and the place and people are lovely.
Few words of advise. Air conditioning is expensive, 10 euros per day and is only in the bedroom, not effective for anyone sleeping in the living area.
Do not upgrade to half board with First Choice, you will get a limited menu and not treated in the same manner as paying guests in the taverna.
Special thanks to Yannis in the bar for making our stay memorable. He works really hard and is brilliant at making cocktails and makes all the guests feel special.
Pool was lovely and clean. Although the apartments are on the sea front there is no direct beach access from the hotel, you have to walk a short distance down the road which is not a problem.
The Area is extremely pretty and the best sunset ever.
Check for hidden costs when booking excursions with First Choice. Paid a lot of money for trip to Knouss only to find we then had to pay an entrance fee on arrival.

It was great. We all loved it,especially the staff. Yanna,Iriana,Yannis,Caterina and Yannis are fabulous. Yannis the barman is the 'devil in disguise' and will ply you with Raki,'Yammas' we all cry. Well we were crying the next day when we couldnt see straight. Mick and Rose were good fun, and Mark, Elaine and the girls were great company. Chris and Becky from Bolton made the holiday also and we had some really special times.
The rooms are clean and the food is great.The other guests were really friendly too and we all made our own entertainment til 3,4,5 in the morning.
Yanna is lovely and wants everyone to return. She has the most amazing red hair its like 'wild fire' and her personality matches, she's red hot. The kids loved the pool, but you do need to get up early for beds. Fortunately Mark from Bradford got up with little Carla so he nabbed us a couple of beds. Didn't want to leave it was so friendly, and we have stayed all over the world. This was a holiday to remember. Thanks to everyone we met at Golden Bay for good memories. What a fantastic holiday. The apartments were lovely and clean. The beach was great only about 7 or 8 minutes walk away. You did have to get up early for a sunbed but as we went on the beach most days that didn't bother us too much, by the time we came back in the afternoon there was the odd bed available. We met some great people during our stay Marc, Sue and the boys, Tracy, Curtis and kids, not to mention Lisa and Claire and loads more. Yannis 'the barman' would party all night if you let him, every time you went for a drink you would get a 'shot' as well. Yanna was lovely and couldn't do enough for you. The food was great and during our stay we never had a bad meal. Our holiday was relaxing, enjoyable and very Greek, it didn't seem touristy at all, which is what we wanted. The donuts on the beach are to die for, Lisa will confirm that as she had one every day. The air conditioning was quite expensive 10 Euros per day. We didn't pay for sunbeds on the beach if you had a drink from the bar. We had to be out of our room for 10 m but as weren't being picked up until 3.10am the next morning we paid 30 Euros to have our room until 6pm. A lovely lady from Birmingham gave us some blankets so all the kids could sleep on a sunbed until the bus came. All in all a great holiday, good company, good food and we would definately go back.

the apartments were really nice,very clean and tidy .Didnt eat in the hotel resteraunt we went out every night .hotel very nean the beach with a few shops and resteraunts but quite a walk, i recomend hireing a car .Staff were helpfull and up for a laugh , nice with the kids.entertainment, on some nights .

We arrived 17/07 and found the hotel very clean and had a warm welcome and the weather 40degrees. Hotel has has a lovely clean pool with childrens section.
Located just across a small road next to the sea and a short stroll to a few small beaches and is in a good quiet and central location for the attractions of the water park and shopping in Gouves etc etc.
Although we were self-catering we ate at the hotel and found the food and wine good and reasonable--- again with good service.
All the staff are more than happy to help with endless fun from Yianna during the day.
We didn't expect much entertainment and it consists of a good old sing song on Kareoke night and a Greek evening. Nights around the bar talking to friends Yannis the bar man is great and loves a chat and a drink with you.
We made some special friends here and would definately return.

This is the best hotel I have ever stayed at in Greece from the minute we landed to leaving everybody was marvellous the staff will try and remember everybodys name.
Yanna has a great sense of humour ask about her bar tricks but dont push her in the lovely pool as her hair dye comes out.
Irania (sexy manager)is lovely and will always have a smile for you. Yannis the handyman is a cheeky chappy he will also be your waiter of an evening in the excellent taverna along with the lovely caterina.
And as for yannis the evening barman he is just a bad influence he will serve you until the last man drops and he isnt shy with the shots either but word of warning watch the raki !!
His kareoke nights are a good laugh and he will be the first up "like a virgin" I bet. The greek night at the taverna is good value with a large buffet, free wine and soft drinks and as much as you can eat but be wary as you will be dancing around the tables and road.

Golden Bay Apartments is situated on the north coast of crete in the area of Gournes, it is on the sea front and about 15 minutes from the airport. It is in a quiet location and ideal for those of us who like it so where the young children can enjoy themselves. Although we were self catering we did eat at the hotel and found the service excellent and the food good. The prices were reasonable and three meals including drinks in a super location was around 20 euros. The room was spotless and cleaned every day with new bed sheets. On arrival you are offered a safe in the room at 17 euros per week. Air conditioning whilst fitted in all rooms is remote controlled and the remote control is 70 euros per week to make it work, well worth the price in the heat. I cannot speak highly enough of the staff, all of them are great and go the extra mile to make your stay as good as possible, we wont forget them and do plan to go back. The entertainment is greek dancing on a thursday with a BBQ for about 25 euros per person and is a good night, Kareoke in the bar until everyones had enough and general chit chat making good friends by the pool and pool bar. We will be going back to this hotel the staff are excellent.
