The villages where we stayed were lovely, full of tavernas serving great food. There were a few bars and lots of shops selling local crafts and gifts. There was a internet cafe near by and a crazy golf course for the kids.
Hersonissos its self was horrible, cheap and nasty and very busy. There was a Spa supermarket which had more choice and some nice clothes shops but it is a resort for the young. The beach was terrible so we got on a bus and went to Stalis about 20 minutes away.It had water sports and beach side restaurants from where you hired your sun beds etc.Make sure you shop around for the best deals.

I thought piskopiano village and koutouloufari were fantastic! The restaurants were great and good value much better than Hersonissos.
Most of the time we walked down to Hersonissos(10min) but got a taxi back up which was 5euro.
The bars in Hersonissos were great and I really enjoyed the water park just down the road which had a great beach attached-well worth a visit as Hersonissos beach wasn't that good.
I would definitely go back to piskopiano but not to piskopiano village apts maybe Asterias village next time as the staff there were fantastic when we had drinks there.

Piskopiano is a lovely little place. Lots of Tavernas and a few bars and quite a few little souvenier shops. It's mainly based on one long street, with the odd little back street of bars and shops. Lovely views from the Taverna's of Hersonossis. Its about 15-20 mins into the main resort of Hersonossis (all down hill) and can be quite tiring get back up in the hot sun, even for someone like us, who are quite fit. I believe Old Hersonossis is quite nice too, but we never got there, as we were only there a week!
If you want a nice quiet, relaxing holiday, try Piskopiano.

Piskopiano is a small quiet resort about 20-30 mins walk up hill from Hersonissos. There are plenty of supermarkets, restaurants/ tavernas within a few minutes from the apartments. If you feel like a change of scenery, Old Hersonissos is about 15 mins walk, and Koutouloufari about 10 mins; the later has a huge choice of tavernas etc, and is well worth exploring. Most places seem to stay open as long as there are people wanting to spend their euros.
If you want to party until breakfast, Hersonissos would be a better bet.
We thought the resort was great for a quieter holiday, and found the locals very friendly.

piskopiano in hersonisis is a beautiful resort full of some of the best taverna's i have ever dined in,it is one of cretes old villages and has 2 like villages on either side namely old hersonissos and koutouloufari both full of tavernas bars and small shops It is only a 20 minute stroll down to the main town of hersonissos were the is plenty for everyone .the only downside was inexperienced kids drinking and driving quad bikes(on run in the back ofb a lorry and killed himself and maimed his girlfriend while we were there).on the positive side the people are very friendly and i will be visiting again.

The village is very pretty and quaint with a rustic feel, locals sit on the village seats at night for a gossip and to watch the world go by. It can get busy with cars and quad bikes at night when people come up from the town to eat at the superior restaurants up there.
The only entertainment we saw were four local fellows who toured around the bars singing. They were great fun!!!
The beach is quite a walk, around 15mins walk. There are little bays and a larger one to the left of the resort looking from land down to the sea.
There is also a water park although we did not go, that is in walking distance.
There are a few small shops catering for the self-catering brigade and a few gift type shops in the villages. But where it excels is the quality of the many restaurants. We recommend Galini in Koutalafari and the first restaurant on the right as you enter the square of Old Hersonnisos village on the corner.
And yes we will definately be going back to this charming friendly quiet little corner of Crete where everyone welcomes you with a smile.

Away from the rowdiness of Hersonissos, ideal for families or those looking for a quiet resort. Good selection of restaurants close by, 10 minute walk to the next village of Koutalafari with more restaurants and nice souvenir shops. Short walk to buses for those who want to explore the island.
Tourists on quad bikes were a real menace though for pedestrians on the narrow roads and the noise can drown out conversation at times
