A small resort, with approximately 30 tavernas ranging from Gyros (kebab) bars to sit down dining. Not much in the way of low cost eating except the take away kebab. The main sea front is closed to car traffic at night so relativly safe to walk about. I found prices expensive (this is blamed on the Euro)a meal of 1 starter and 4 main courses cost around 30-40Euros plus drinks. The resort is a small port and plenty of cargo/ferry ships coming and going to watch

Sami is a first class resort. I had heard a few bad/negative things about Sami before I went but after exploring the island I'm glad I chose Sami. It has many restaurants and tavernas all closely packed together offering every kind of cuisine you can think of at a very reasonable price. Sami harbour (where the set of Captain Corelli's Mandolin was filmed) is very attractive with nice views looking towards Ithika. Sami also offers excursions to Italy and Ithika at a very cheap rate. The resorty had a post office, bank, travel agencies, exchange facilities, jeweleers, florists, hairdressers etc so you could get anything you required. Sami is also 3km from the underground caves and about the same distance to Melisanni Lake. Old Sami (pre-earthquake of 1953) is also worth a visit. Sami doesn't really have a beach but Antisamoss beach approx 1km away is a lovely pebbled cove which quite and safe and easily accessible by car.

Sami is a lovely village, more traditional than Lassi or Scala. There are plenty of tavernas along the front but some of the food could be better.
If you are keen on walking there are lots of nice routes in the vicinity.
The beach is quite pebbly, but nice and clean.
