We've just returned from two weeks in The Santa Maria. Actually, we booked for the San Anton across the road, but as the room was damp because of roof repairs and recent rain, we were moved to The Santa maria.
The room was clean, with towels changed every day. We found the staff very polite and efficient, although the ordering system at the bar is ridiculous. You have to queue to order drinks and pay a cashier at the till, who then gives you a receipt, which you give to the bar staff, after queueing again, who will serve the drinks. The hotel is about a 5 or 10 minute walk from Buggiba, where there is the sea, and quite a few OK bars & restaurants. I would recommend it to anyone over 35-40, but I think teenagers would prefer St Julians or St Georges, where the discos & nightlife is.

i thought that in the santa maria hotel the staff were friendly, the food was delisious it was food i like.
i was 14 when i went and i found that there was alot for me and my 2 brothers (12 and 16 at the time) to do. We had so much fun there and we are hoping to go bck this november.

It was mainly because the people were so friendlyto me that i didn't want to come back to england because i would miss the friendly faces im not to sure weather to mention names so i wont but almost everyone that works there was really friendly to me and made sure i was smileing for the whole 2 weeks. 6 of us stayed at the Santa Maria for the last 2 weeks of JUly. The party included 4 adults between the ages of 30 and 60 and 2 teenagers.
Food - For the 1st week of our stay the food was quite good however this changed considerably in the 2nd week once the hotel was fully booked. The snacks from the bar etc are very good If you are a fussy eater then I would suggest you go self catering as their is very little variety on offer. There are plenty of good restaurants in Bugibba approx. 5-10 minutes walk away. The Bayside near McDonalds is exceptionally good.
Cleanliness - The rooms and hotel areas are generally kept very clean. The only problem was that the hotel toilets were constantly out of order.Unfortunately this seemed to be caused by the disgusting habits of the other holidaymakers who were there at the time.
Drinks - Plenty of variety, local lager not too bad. Service was good again for the 1st week only. This changed in the 2nd week when you had to order at the till and again at the bar. Staff always friendly. If you are a spirits drinker sorry to disappoint you but spirits are sold in 1/6 gill.
Entertainment - Live bands on most nights but unfortunately aimed towards the coffin dodgers (sorry if that term causes any offence). There is a disco Friday - Sunday night but it is generally quiet with not a lot of people going in. Although advertised for adults only teenagers are allowed in so it is a welcome break from the 'i'm bored' syndrome. Parents please be aware that the bar staff in the disco DID sell alcohol to obviously underage teenagers. There are quizzes etc during the day and bingo every night. The hotel could certainly benefit from more variety in the entertaiment.
A special mention for Lee the DJ and entertainments manager who has had some bad press in previous reviews. I found him to be a very sweet and charming guy who went out of his way to ensure we had a good holiday. He just needs the odd reminder that Scotland,Ireland and Wales are also part of the UK.
For anyone in the 20-35 age group a trip to Paceville is a must. Lots of pubs and discos. A really good night out. It cost approx. 6 lira each way in a taxi.
If you are looking for a relaxing hassle free holiday then Malta is ideal. If you are not I would suggest you avoid Malta altogether. If you have any questions on the santa maria or the san anton across the road please feel free to e-mail me. ally_arab@yahoo.co.uk

food variety and quality leaves a lot to be desired. no fruit served with the meals. entertainment geared towards the over 50's with the same band on most nights. staff are always helpful and cheerful although not the quickest. you must pay for your drinks at the till then re-order at the bar which slows things down considerably.the disco would be better if not full of drunken underage teenagers whose parents can't be bothered to keep an eye on them. the dj and entertainments manager lee is a really nice guy.don't know how anyone can describe him as a pervert, never mind an old one.
if the food and entertainment was a bit more varied i would definitely consider going back to the santa maria.

The hotel was not very clean at all! There were cockroaches in the dining hall which meant we ate out every night, the entertainment wasn't even in this hotel it was in the one across the road, do not go to this hotel!!!

Well its all inclusive (as i only do all inclusive) and i was so dissapointed with the food in the resturant, very little choice, and did not taste the best :-( but the snacks in the snack bar open 10am-12am (except 5pm-10pm??)
are wonderful, no entertainment for the young, crapy live bands!! and bingo moost nights, and cardinals night club fri-sun playing you very best Trance all night???? ave age of customer was in 50's and the DJ Lee ASHTRAY played trace because he liked it, but you dont have to go in the night club if you dont like it. Drink is good not the biggest choice for AI but includes carlsberg and calsberg in bottles also. and single mesures in the spirits only.
hotel and rooms were cleen, staff great, and you can also use opposite hotel san anton, which was great it is owned by santa maria so you can use all facilities there, guiness, cafferys, carlsberg. was on tap.
100m from sea down steep hills or steps, shops near by,
but overall i and my partner had a great stay there, worth a visit, but only if you dont mind little choice on food in main meals.
