I have stayed multiple times in Mauritius and if it wasn't for the fact that I have stayed in the best the island has to offer I would have given this a 5 star but the best this hotel can get is a 4*. It has some real short comings in the most basic things that you would not expect a 5* to miss.
The positives:-
It is a very proactive hotel in terms of trying to bring new ideas - a coffee bar with around the world coffees for example. Nice touch for new customers wanting a decent coffee in the morning.
The staff are very welcoming and have a good attitude.
The kid's club staff were fantastic and the kids actually wanted to go to it.
The grounds and the rooms are lovely and very well maintained in ever aspect and are not worn.
The snorkelling was some of the best that we have experienced during our stays on the island.
The negatives:-
Breakfast buffet on the face of it was fantastic because there was quite a lot of variety, however, the place constantly ran out of things and did not have enough to keep everyone happy.
The restaurants are very pricey for what you get and hit and miss on quality. You will find that if you eat at the outside restaurants you will get 5 times the portion when it is a quarter of the price - this is not a lie. The Indian restaurant is very nice indeed, unsure if it is Michelin starred food or if it should even be referred to as that level.
The advertised activities at the hotel were frequently booked up for days. Can you really advertise that you offer free water skiing if you have to wait on the beach for an hour with 25 other holidaymakers for your 20 mins turn for the day.
The tennis courts we never even managed to get on and when we went to visit them it stunk of raw sewage - not nice.
Sun loungers get booked up so you find yourself searching the hotel for the last remaining beds. Regardless of this the weather was amazing and the cocktails drowned the disappointment of not have a lounger.
Overall it is a very nice hotel and I would stay again however there are the most basic things in terms of process and simple hospitality that goes missing or they have simply forgot about. On the island there are other hotels that have done the basics very well and it is those alone that mean that you will go back. Simple things like knowing what drink you like and also having a laugh with you about your local football team. The staff are great but it is the little touches that this place misses.
Dont get caught up in the hype of having great reviews and thinking that you are untouchable from bad customer experiences.
