My family and I stayed at the Allegro Dec 26-31, 2004. Reading the previous comments I must admit, my expectations were lowered. Upon arriving we found that the hotel was overbooked by 90 (!) rooms. My parents and sister were moved to the hotel next door also owned by Occidental, Royal Hideaway for all 5 nights. While this was an "upgrade" for them, my husband and I were not allowed to visit, use facilities or dine at their location. We later found that the other overbookings arriving later in the day were being sent to hotels 15 KM away or back to Cancun or Cozumel. The hotel staff blamed the reservation agency in Spain and operators such at Funjet and Worry Free vacations for the overbookings. We booked through Funjet, who when confronted, blamed the hotel.

The hotel was nice with activities throughout the days like Spanish lessons, yoga, water games for teenagers and nightly shows (mostly geared toward families with preteen or teenage kids). The Italian and Mexican restaurants (reservations req'd) were difficult to book with available dining times at between 8:30 - 9:30 pm, were very tasty and worthwhile. The buffet was to be expected with same or similar food at every meal.

I must commend the wait staff, housekeeping and on-site Lomas Travel, who organized the excursions. They all did an excellent job! The front desk staff and guest services left much to be desired when it came to customer service. The hotel was still overbooked by 4 rooms when we checked out and we never did receive the hammock we daily requested for our balcony.

Despite the issues, we choose to have a good vacation. The area is beautiful, however, I would steer away from the Occidentals due to the issues above.

Overall, the holiday was very good, especially for the children (aged 18,16 and 11 who enjoyed the poolside entertainment). The actual rooms were more 3 star, rather than 4, and were quite small and basic. There were minor irritations, eg. blocked toilet, shower spilling water over the tub and flooding the floor, little storage space, dimly lit, noise from guests in room above, unmade paths being cemented over around the accommodation during the first week. The air conditioning worked fine. Food, drink, entertainment, and staff service were all very good. I found that speaking some Spanish and smiling elicited a better response from staff, especially when reporting problems. During the last couple of days (2-3 August), it started to get noticeably more busy and noisy with larger groups of younger guests arriving, so we were glad to be leaving. It also started to get a lot more humid. Apart from our youngest, we all had bouts of diarrhea so don't forget the Immodium (maybe it was the alcohol!). We brought plenty of Autan lotion and wipes to keep the mosquitoes away, also Raid insecticide to spray the rooms. Still got bitten by small black midges at the pool during the day though. If you like straws with your cocktails, bring your own, they don't provide any. We would have liked an indoor bar with music/piano (and possibly a dance floor) to go to at night. There was Fast Eddie's but that was more for younger people (18-25)and children were not allowed in.

I found this hotel to be more 3* than 4*, the rooms were very basic. Upon having an overflowing toilet we complained to reception but it took them two days to rectify the problem. The food was not up to much either in the buffet, was not always hot. The A LA Carte restaurants were ok though
