Please take note that the only reason I have marked this resort down is due to the Hurricane damage, therefore I cannot comment further.

The resort was clean and the locals very friendly, beware timeshare if you decide to book trips in town they are everywhere. Just outside this hotel there are 3 sister hotels which you can use during your stay and there are also 2 in Cancun you can also use. The beach what can i say it took my breath away it was so beautiful and the water so clear you could see right to the bottom no matter how far out you were. You could feed fish with bread in the sea and they came from nowhere it was so clear, you could see them all.

Very relaxing, but has things going on if you want it. Very clean. Never saw any litter lying about.
Very friendly cheerful locals, and never heard a bad word said.Buses to Cancun from Playa del Carmen only a few dollars. Also you can get a ferry to Cozumel.Lovely clean beaches with plenty of sunbeds & water sports.
Playa del Carmen has plenty of gift shops and bars. Food in bars excellent, but you need to be hungry as big portions. Dolphin trip is fantastic.
Can be expensive but worth it!! Good for golfers too.

There is a small village square nearby which has some traditional mexican shops, chemist, etc and there is always a traditional mexican band playing music. The streets are lovely and clean and you can walk into Playa del Carmen which is just about 10 mins away. It is a lovely walk and there are some beautiful holiday homes and hotels in the surrounding area. A taxi ride back from Playa del Carmen is only a few dollars. Well worth a visit.

Our hotel was actually in Playacar which is the hotel zone for Playa Del Carmen. PDC is a lovely little town with the main Street being Quinta Avenida (5th Avenue) this is where most of the bars & restaurants are.
Although we were staying all inclusive we had a couple of nights out here. During the day we had a trip across to Cozumel on the Ferry the town of San Miguel is nice but there are lots of jewellery shops (to cater for the cruise ships which dock here for the day so lots of loud Americans).
Just one thing to be aware of in PDC if you are in a bar and a Mariachi Band come & play for you be prepared to hand over at least $10 or just say no thank you (we learned the hard way!). But all in all a lovely little town.

My family and I stayed at the Allegro Dec 26-31, 2004. Reading the previous comments I must admit, my expectations were lowered. Upon arriving we found that the hotel was overbooked by 90 (!) rooms. My parents and sister were moved to the hotel next door also owned by Occidental, Royal Hideaway for all 5 nights. While this was an "upgrade" for them, my husband and I were not allowed to visit, use facilities or dine at their location. We later found that the other overbookings arriving later in the day were being sent to hotels 15 KM away or back to Cancun or Cozumel. The hotel staff blamed the reservation agency in Spain and operators such at Funjet and Worry Free vacations for the overbookings. We booked through Funjet, who when confronted, blamed the hotel.

The hotel was nice with activities throughout the days like Spanish lessons, yoga, water games for teenagers and nightly shows (mostly geared toward families with preteen or teenage kids). The Italian and Mexican restaurants (reservations req'd) were difficult to book with available dining times at between 8:30 - 9:30 pm, were very tasty and worthwhile. The buffet was to be expected with same or similar food at every meal.

I must commend the wait staff, housekeeping and on-site Lomas Travel, who organized the excursions. They all did an excellent job! The front desk staff and guest services left much to be desired when it came to customer service. The hotel was still overbooked by 4 rooms when we checked out and we never did receive the hammock we daily requested for our balcony.

Despite the issues, we choose to have a good vacation. The area is beautiful, however, I would steer away from the Occidentals due to the issues above.

The Yucatan is in Playacar, which is very small but good for a short stroll. Playa del Carmen is easily walkable in 30-40 minutes but you will need a beer when you get there! Playa is pretty good, plenty of shops, bars etc.
We do recommend the ferry over to Cozamel island. Also the local bus to Cancun.
We did a dolphin swim - fantastic! Also a full day at Chitzen Itza mayan ruins - superb!
The sea and beaches in mexico are just wonderful.
