Not so much a review, but more of an update on my previous review.
The Marina Rio continues to provide excellent accomodation close to the town. Noteable improvements since our last stay are that safety boxes in rooms are now complimentary (modern, electronic safes where you choose your own combination)and room locks are now card-operated.Your keycard also fits into a slot just inside the room which operates the room's electricity supply.Should you need two keycards, reception will gladly supply a duplicate free of charge.
The rooftop pool (just a small plunge pool, really)has been revamped with plastic decking and is now heated.
Finally, although a computer is available in the lobby at no cost, the wi-fi in the lobby area is supplied by Vodafone and a charge of

My mum and I have just returned from a week's stay here.. It was our first time to Portugal in about 20 years ! and we both thoroughly enjoyed it. We booked through First Choice and the Rep for our area, Kay, was lovely and very helpful - not your usual young and inexperienced rep! The hotel was wonderful and very accommodating. It only has 36 bedrooms but has recently been refurbished and was spotlessly clean and modern. The staff were all very friendly but unobtrusive. They only do bed and breakfast but there are plenty of places to go and eat ! Far too many to choose from in a week ! Breakfast was a typical continental one - lots of local breads, cold meats, cheese, fresh fruit, yoghurts, cereal, danish pastries and a different type of egg each day - the eggs are delicious by the way!! The only downfall is the coffee if you are a big coffee drinker. They only use longlife milk which makes it taste funny - this will be the case in any hotel though I'm sure as there is no fresh milk in the Algarve. I drink tea which tasted fine to me, but mum said the coffee wasn't too nice. Apparently the thing to do is to take the coffee from the jug of hot coffee followed by a squirt of hot milk from the machine! The hotel is a short walk from the old town of Lagos where the main hubbub is.. but beware of the cobbles !! We found them very slippery and actually saw a few broken legs while we were there !!! We had a room over looking the Marina which we would definitely recommend. You have the sun in the morning, and after spending all day in the heat the coolness of the afternoon is appreciated. The back rooms that have the sun all afternoon overlook the bus station which isn't really very attractive. The rooms do have air conditioning though which is useful ! The only thing that we would say about the hotel, is that if you like to swim and sunbathe by a pool then this might not be the place for you as the pool is very small and is only really big enough to dip in to cool off. We're not great swimmers though so that didn't bother us at all. We sunbathed on the roof top most days as there are loungers, chairs and tables with parasols that you can freely use, although there are only 12 loungers available. The beach is a short walk away across the bridge next to the marina, but you will have to pay for your loungers and umbrellas - 12euros a day I think. We would highly recommend this family run hotel and Lagos to anyone and will hopefully be returning..

The Marina Rio is a small (33 bedroom) hotel, ideally situated on the main waterfront road, opposite the Marina and a pleasant 10 minute stroll from the town centre over level ground;there is wheelchair access to the hotel via ramps alongside the entrance steps.A lift serves all three upper floors, but the rooftop terrace and small pool area can only be reached via stairs.

The hotel is spotless and towels are changed daily;bathrooms are equipped with hairdryers and shaver points and an iron is available from reception,so you can keep luggage weight down if you wish.

A good quality cold buffet is served for breakfast and hot bacon, sausages and scrambled egg appear occasionally. The hotel bar is small but well stocked and prices are reasonable when compared to those charged in the town;draught beer is, however, not normally available in low season.

All staff, from reception to cleaners, are very friendly and helpful.

Whilst there is no set entertainment at the Marina Rio,internet access is available at a reasonable charge and the reception and lounge areas are wi-fi enabled.

Being adjacent to the bus station and only a 5 minute walk from the railway station, the hotel is well positioned for those wishing to use the public transport system to see other parts of the Algarve. However, don't leave it 'til the last minute to go to either station as you have to purchase your tickets before boarding and there are usually queues.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Marina Rio and would have no hesitation whatsoever in returning.
