I personally feel that the hotel should be rated 4* as there were certain aspects that didn't quite meet a 5* criteria. The buffet breakfast offered a big variety of cold and hot food, and all the staff throughout the hotel were helpful, although most of the bar staff hardly smiled!
My main criticicsm was the daily cleaning of the rooms - dirty glasses were left and the bathroom not always cleaned properly, although the bed linen and carpets were clean.
I would stay there again, but as a travel agent, would advise any of my clients that it is not a 5* as they may be used to!

We stayed on a bed and breakfast basis and one night decided to join in on the 'Madiera' night in the dining room. What a mistake. It was expensive and all we were treated to were Madierians dancing and singing their native stuff. Boring. The breakfasts were great, with good choice of all types of fruit, bread and fry ups (tho' sometimes they were on the cold side!)
Our bedroom was huge with a nice sea view and found it to be nice and clean everyday. no complaints there.
Location was good as Funchal is spread out a bit so there is no real central area in the town really.
There was no entertainment laid on. We stayed at easter time and there was lots of baby chicks in the foyer which was nice except for the smell of chicks when you entered the hotel.
We enjoyed our stay there really, but watch out for the bill at the end. They tried to charge us for poolside drinks which we did not have, and checking out at 4:45am we were barely awake to argue but we did. The grumpy male receptionist waived the drinks charge eventually.
It was a pity that it ended on such a sour note for us, as we had enjoyed our stay there really.

This hotel is a true 5* you enter by a long sweeping road full of flower and well keep lawns, the hotel loby is a very grand with plesant staff at the desk further on are sofa's and chairs and then a bar/coffee lounge, to the side is a shop and wine sellers.
The restaurant is on a lower floor with views of the pool and sea we only had B&B but the breakfast was very good with hot and cold to a good standard.
Our room had just been refurbished and was well set out, it was cleaned every day and fresh towels daily it also had views over the hills/town and harbour, the rest of the hotel was also spotless.
The entertainment was by a house band who played most kinds of music for all age groups as we were there new years eve they had a gala dinner with fine food and a great show and plenty of free drinks.
The hotel also runs trips to most sites on the island at cheaper rates than the tour groups.
