We have just returned from a week at Sun Island.
We arrived at about 9.30pm (30 min taxi journey costing 40 euros) and the reception area was deserted. The receptionist quickly checked us in and we went to our room.
Nice large room with separate bedroom and good cooking facilities if you were self catering. Room was clean with fresh bedding and towels. We were situated towards the end of the complex in the Tenerife block around a lovely pool.
The main pool was very quiet and had a bar where you could get a drink. The pool was also heated which was a pleasant surprise.
The whole comple was like a ghost town which we found very strange. We managed to track down a bar in the Dome which is a big entertainment area but that was only open twice during the week. The other evenings there was just a small bar open with little entertainment going on, this was a bit disappointing.
The food was okay. Not a great deal of choice but always something to eat. Fish, meat, good choice of salads, fruit, cakes, ice-cream etc, the staff work very hard and were friendly on the whole.
The location is okay, it's a good 20 minute walk into Playa Blanca but fairly flat walking.
Sun Island obviously has a contract with a Senior Spanish travel company as about 90% of the people staying there were elderly. There was only a handful of families/couples. Which is, I suspect why the entertainment was so poor.
We had a very relaxed holiday and especially enjoyed our days around the peaceful main pool, but if you're looking for a hotel with loads going on I would choose somewhere else.

We had a really nice, relaxed holiday in the Sun Island complex. All the staff were extremely friendly and professional, every one of them took obvious pleasure in answering any questions we had and making sure we were enjoying the holiday.
We were self catering so we are unable to comment on the standard of the all inclusive meals but other people we spoke to all said that they were enjoying the food.
The very large grounds are immaculately maintained and worthy of a 5 star catergory. Sun Island operate a security system that enables guests to exit the complex by an electronically operated gate at a convenient spot onto the main road. The swipe card required for this is supplied from the main reception and a 10 euro deposit is asked for which is refunded in full at the end of the holiday.
It is quite a walk to the centre of Playa Blanca which takes between 15 to 20 minutes, just the sort of light exercise you need after enjoying the extra food and drink consumed on a holiday!

Spent one week at Sun Island on an AI basis. Found rooms and public areas to be clean. One small restaurant, food never hot and very repetitive, same sweets every day just different flavors.
Pools were supposed to be heated but were freezing and 1.5m deep, so no good for small children. One small bar (run out of wine every night!)Entertainment, forget it, rubbish.
Needed to purchased a key for gate to get to beach and commercial center (10 euros) also states 10 mins to beach, only if your linford christie! This complex lacks the facilities to be an AI hotel.
All in all I am very disappointed with this hotel but, I loved the island.

Sun Island Hotel Lanzarote. The hotel reception and public areas were clean.
Our room which was situated on the ground floor was plagued with ants, reporting this to reception was met with deaf ears.
The ants were eliminated by purchasing ant killer ourselves. The 'carpet' of dead ants on the bathroom floor remained there for the duration of our stay at the hotel.
The food was always cold and of very basic choice. One choice of potato (several times which weren't cooked thoroughly)or rice.
Usually one meat and fish dish. Salad bar very good. Choice of desert menu did not change for the 2 weeks we stayed there.
The hotel describes itself as being 200 yards from the beach but it is more like 800-900 yards. Situated in the middle of a very large building development. Very little noise from building site.
The hotel staff - dining and bar staff very miserable.
Entertainment - On our first day at the hotel when we were relaxing around the main pool, we were approached by a member of the Animation team who spoke only German or Spanish.
We finally comunicated to him that we were British and he appologised in broken English that no one on the Animation spoke English.
The Evening entertainment was very poor e.g 'Grease' were the Animation team tried very poorly to mime to taped tracks from the musical.
As mentioned above the Animation team only spoke German or Spanish and did not have a clue of the English wording of Grase.
The 'Welcome' party again was only in German.
Advertised as a 4* Hotel, but in our opinion more like a 2*+ hotel.
