Firtsly this hotel is described as 4*, I would say it is 3*. We stayed on the top floor and were troubled by roosting pigeons that left a terrible stink particularly on a hot day. The reception staff were unhelpful to the point of being rude, not just with this aspect, but as they were each time I dealt with them including as I checked out and they could not properly reconcile my bill.
The rooms were quite well appointed although our landing was solid wall, it was brought to my attention that the open balcony's bottom rail had a quite large gap that a small child could easily get through.
The hotel was clean and tidy despite the fact it was aging, particularly around the pool.
The food was better than average and I have to say our food was not in any way cold. The staff here put the reception staff to shame, they were forever courteous and knew they were there to serve the customer!

I found that almost every facilty was to be charged for, the fridge in the room is 2e/day, tennis 8e/hour, sunbed cushion 1e/day, ping pong bats 2e/half hour (go out and buy the kids a set for 3.5e) and it goes on.
The bar staff were also courteous and on the ball, serving decent food snacks and reasonably priced drinks around the pool and bar area. The maids would clean the rooms make the beds, but did not do the job as thouroughly as we would have liked. I was also concerned on the number of times we returned to our room and found the door open by the maid but she would be in another room sometimes well away from the room itself.
The entertainment met the needs of the kids but it was quite poor otherwise, I have to say the animation team worked very hard to keep the children entertained.
The hotel is situated back from the main front street although this in itself was a plus. I hope I have not put people off because it is not a bad hotel, just a few pointers I would have found the benefit of knowing if I had read this review before hand

The Montagut was very good in all aspects.

The room was excellent with tasteful decor and with having a separate bedroom and lounge was one of the best we have had.The bathroom too was very good.

All areas of the hotel were kept very clean.

The choice of food was really good(as said previously not always hot enough though).

We didnt watch much of the entertainment.

The bar prices were quite reasonable for a hotel.

The pool area was good and plenty of sunbeds.

The hotel was in a good position in the resort as it was a nice walk either way and was only about 10 minutes walk to the train station.

This hotel is the only one I found that had suites and not 4 beds in one room, lounge with a sprung sofa bed, loads of storage, TV with 4 English channels, hairdryer and a separate twin bedroom, good bathroom with powerful shower, all cleaned daily. Would have liked to see tea/coffee making facilities though.

Our first holiday as a family in a hotel was good, there was entertainment from the hotel kids club, same 4 action songs but the little kids loved it, something for the older ones and every night some kind of entertainment eg,magic shows, acrobatic shows and the kids always got a row of seats for themselves.

Food was better than we thought it would be, after going SC for many years. You could get a really decent meal as there was so much on offer, my children tried squid, rabbit and langoustine! My only niggle was that it wasn't always hot. Drink prices were good too, not over pricey and staff, although not the best at English (as there were more Spanish/Dutch and German there) did their best to help.

The position of the hotel was good too. As the resort is only " hotels deep its not far from the beach and main street, but not near any noisy hotels or bars. If there was this hotel in every destination then I would definitely use it.

Formally an apart hotel, this place has been totally transformed into a worthy 4star hotel. I've just returned from a short break there and was most impressed. The standard of decor is impressive, the staff could not have been more friendly, and the rooms were wonderful.

We had a pool facing view on the 4th floor. The rooms are very well equiped, including bed settee, wardrobes and storage in sitting room too as well as in the bedroom, which have wardobes and 2 single beds. There's a mini bar in the sittingroom which cost 20 euros including the drinks. Then you have full use of the fridge for the remainder of your hols. There is a hairdryer in the bathroom, and the shower is so powerful, it'll blow you away.

The dining room had loads of choices and the head waiter and wine waiter were wonderful. Children's entertainment was first, then the adults were catered for adequatly. The pool area is very well kept with loads of sunbeds. A matress for the beds will cost you a euro each time, although they are comfy enough without a matress too.

Thomas Cook are the agents for this hotel and although we travelled independantly, their Rep Louisa (I think) was very helpful when I required some info. Will most certainly go back again. 8)

When we arrived at Gerona airport at 02.30am we were told by an Airtours rep that our original hotel choice the Santa Sussanna Apartments were closed so they upgraded us to the hotel across the road.

When we arrived at the Montagut at 03.50am we were told we were on the top floor and we weren't shown to our room.

Upon entering the room it hadn't been cleaned from the previous occupants and there wasn't any crockery or cutlery to eat or drink with/from.

We went to reception to complain and all we got from the porter is "its not my fault what can I do wait until the morning" which we did. We asked again and were told "you pay extra for the cups dishes and kettle etc or hire them from the shop next door"

The food in the hotel was horrendous seafood for every meal and even that was burnt.

The location was good as there was an english pub called the ship at the end of the street thank god.

Staff were totally obnoxious and unhelpful (unless we were German)
The bingo was called out in 6 languages with English being the last.

I wouldn't visit that hellhole ever again even if it was free.

This was my first trip abroad and my 3 yr old sons too
will never ever travel with airtours again.

All we recieved was 42 euros compensation each at the airport before we saw the hotel this was non negotiable.

Totally disagree with the other report.

Don't be put off. The food is of a decent standard with a good choice available. Wouldn't say its the most kid-friendly though. If the little ones only like fishfingers and burgers, don't expect to find them here!

What was Mr Hughes expecting?? The porter to show each and every guest to their room in the early hours of the morning?!?! The more knowledgable traveller will know that this doesn't happen in ANY hotel!

The staff are helpful too, with the entertainment team particularly pleasant.

So what if the Bingo was called in 6 languages?! And English was last?! How can we live on?! Whatever next, will the whole world have to learn fluent English?!

The rooms aren't huge so if there are more than 3 in a room don't expect too much space but then you only really sleep there eh?!

All in all a decent hotel well worth the money paid.

The Montagut is being refurbished for summer 04 so should be really good.
