Went to the Tangerine Beach Hotel for two weeks in October and expected a lot of rain, no rain at all except for the last day. Hotel is a little tired around the edges but the staff and service more than made up for that. Food was excellent and a great deal of choice. My wife who is vegetarian found something she liked every meal.
The hotel said don't tip till the end of the holiday to save you carrying money around all the time which I thought a good idea and the staff must have agreed because it did not change their attitude to anyone and the smile did not change whether you gave a tip or not.
I found that the tours that Thomas Cook offered were limited to say the least but we found Yohan from the Red Lobster Restaurant near the Kani Lanka Hotel, a great tour organiser and would recommend him every time for great value and was more than pleased to stop whenever you wanted. Yohan can also arrange local tuk tuk transport, ask for the driver who can't stop laughing, he is so good for you.
But back to the hotel. Room service was excellent. The room was serviced completely twice a day from towels, sheets, mosquito repellent to turning the bed back every evening. The one think I found strange was that they did not include diet drinks in the all-inclusive package. Being diabetic this caused a bit of a problem but when the manager was informed he arranged for me to be supplied with diet coke in my room. Drinks are measured out and you have to sign for them, not usual nowadays and also ice cream was not included, but ice cream is very cheap and I was not stopped ordering double drinks. All in all Sri Lanka is a beautiful country and the Tangerine Beach and the smiling staff made the holiday one to remember. In fact everybody in Sri Lanka smiles. Can't recommend it highly enough.
