The Gambia is fabulous. Friendly, hot and untouched by mass tourism.
Kairaba is not 5 star as you may experience in the Caribbean or Europe. Perhaps a 4 star at best.
However it is one of the best hotels (on balance) you will find in the Gambia and I rate it highly for its grounds, rooms, location and facilities. We have stayed here many times.
Breakfast has not changed for say 8 years, but it served on a wonderful terrace with sea views. The evening Buffets (different each night) can become boring. The pool is not heated... an amazing oversight when you consider the number of guests who mention it. One year they had a fabulous canadian singer/guitarist/kareoke but normally very little entertainment. It is a quiet place to rest from the hurly burly outside.
However where else can you go in 5 hours like this?
1) It has great grounds, lots of grass and much room around the pool.
2) Its on the beach
3) Good choice of quality rooms.
4) You do not have to leave the Hotel but just outside are restaurants (some very good), cafes etc for people watching and shopping. Stay elsewhere and you will need to get taxis to come to this 'strip' every night.
5) Some excellent restaurants are only a short taxi ride away (ie Butchers Block would be first class anywhere.).
6) African Ministers stay here and the service is good+.

This is certainly the best 'resort' hotel we have stayed in. If you like being at one with nature, having monkeys on your balcony, beautiful coloured birds to watch from the comfort of your lounger and gardens with a range of trees and plants not seen outside of Kew Gardens, then this is the place for you.
Outstanding.
Clean rooms, excellent service, although the food wasn't up to the standard of restuarants in the town.
Some of the entertainment was good, some was poor.

Large, well kept hotel, gardens beautful and well looked after. Rooms clean though were a little 'worn' in places. Food was excellent, good portions and service was always with a smile. Entertainment was a bit repetative but nonetheless enjoyable.

I found the Kairaba a fantastic hotel. The grounds are amazing. All the staff are very helpful and friendly. I am a fussy eater and they always managed to accommodate my requests.
We had the best housekeeper. our room was spotless every day. We stayed in house number 5. We had fresh flowers in the room every day.
I cannot fault this hotel. The evening entertainment could have been a bit more exciting but who wants to sit in there hotel every evening.
