Stayed at the Adagio for 4 nights on return leg from Hawaii trip.
Hotel is boutique style, situated in a fairly old building that has been renovated. Main public areas are clean & tidy and staff are great, very helpful and prompt service when we had a small issue (previous guest had left the in room safe locked so we couldn't use it), this was fixed within 5-10 minutes of phoning reception.
We stayed in a normal room and this was very nicely furnished and large with king size bed, sofa, coffee table, desk and hanging space. Only slight downside was noise from the street below, we were 8th floor and you could hear some shouting in the late evening and fairly frequently had fire engines going past and for some reason American fire engines drive very slowly and have a very loud siren. I expect that the noise is better if you take a higher floor.
Hotel bar is very good, bartender will make cocktails, anything you like. There is a nice looking restaurant area too but we didn't eat in so can't comment on the food.
Now, location, I score it 3, but it is 300 yards from being a 5. It's a 5 minute walk to the Powell Street cable car station and Union Square and therefore it's very central for accessing everything in SFO but the last 300 yards walk gets a little bit rough with quite a lot of homeless people. Most are fine but there were one or two who were a bit shouty & nuts. I grew up in Manchester and my wife in Birmingham and we were OK, we didn't feel threatened, it's just a noticeable difference in vibe as you walk away from Union Square towards the hotel.
I would go back and I would happily recommend to friends that are used to cities, I probably wouldn't send my parents there though as they'd not feel comfortable.
