Free Ice Cream!
14 years 3 months ago
This was our 3rd visit to this Youth Hostel. This was a school trip with 3 staff and 14 students.

The Hostel is basic but clean. The rooms likewise. This hostel is situated on the edge of the loop and so is within easy walking distance of just about everything downtown. 20 mins to the Sears ower, 40 mins to Navy Pier, 10 mins to the Lake and another 5 to the museum district.

Breakfast was Continental but enough to fill a hole and allow us to get on with our day.

The hostel staff are very helpful and knowledgeable, the hostel has negotiated many discounts off local attractions and eating places.

They also organise their own cheap (sometimes free) outings and trips although we didn't use them this time. They also have a free ice cream social on Wednesdays, this was very popular with our kids!

I have categorised this as a family holiday as there is not a category for school trip!

This is a 'Youth' Hostel although many residents were far from youthful (myself included). Many nationalities were represented there.

The place is very basic but clean. It was a school trip. The staff stayed in private rooms the students stayed in dormitories. The dorms were for our group's exclusive use.

Dorms were en suite as were the private rooms.

Continental breakfast was included (Cereals, fruit, toast and jam plus cakes, tea, coffee and orange juice). Tea and Coffee were available free all day (and night)!

You could also use the kitchen yourself to self cater if you wished. We didn't but several rsidents used this facility. You had to do your own washing up!

The public rooms had free access to Pool table and ping pong. There was a computer room with pay internet access. A small library is available during the day. An information desk was well stocked with literature and was manned during the day at times.

The front desk was manned 24/7 and they could provide information on everything you needed to know either first hand or by googling it. They were able to provide directions for us to get to the schools, restaurants etc.

I doubt you could stay in Chicago any cheaper at $33 per night per person for the students. Private rooms were more expensive at $130 per night.
