This Hotel is the perfect place to stay for sightseeing and shopping in New York!! It isn't a really modern hotel, but it is in the centre of everywhere you possibly would want to go and it is very clean and inviting when you arrive back to a warm room on the cold snowy days in February.
The breakfast is free with Virgin, we didn't go much as it wasn't much and if you where having to pay I would say go elsewhere as you will get more choice.
This hotel is within walking distance of Central Park (5 min walk), 5th Ave (5 min walk) and Times Square (15 mins max walk) there are subways on each corner of this street and they are really easy to use.
We would not hesitate to use this Hotel again, it is in a very safe area...I travelled with my 18 year old Daughter on a sightseeing trip for her 18th Birthday and we arealready booking to go back next year with all the family...and of course we will be booking the Salisbury.
Staff are great to may I add, don't know why people have said otherwise.

We stayed in a suit and it was great, large roomy and lots of space, am not going to nick pick about any thing to do with the room, it was cleaned daily to all our satifaction.
We did have have the breakfast every morning save one morning when we wanted pancakes, and we could not fault that either.
We didn't find the lifts a problem, most days we went down the stairs, only really using them for going back up to our room, on the ninth floor.
Hotel location , perfect, 100%
Hotel reception staff was not the best we did'nt ever have a good morning or any kind of greetings even when we arrived, yet the cleaning staff was plesent as were the staff in the breakfast room, the porters were nice and even took our pic of our group by the christmas tree, and insisted using out cam recorder to vidio us all togather, we we arrived we got help with our bags, when we were checking out nobody help us, mind you with 6 of us all with tons of shopping bags may be it look a bit to much. also we ask them to call us a cab that didn't go down vary well, he said it would be vary hard on a sunday night to get one, which panic us because we had to go the peirs to get our night cruise I think we decided after we maybe ask the head porter or the head of some thing because he telephone some one else when we was out side to take his place.
Yes were are visiting again in 2009.

I stayed here last February and cannot fault the hotel. In my opinion, you would have to go a long way to beat this hotel for what it costs.
OK, it's not the most modern, but it is comfortable, clean and in an excellent location. The staff are OK - not all over you, but then I don't want that. When I asked any questions, they helped - what more can you ask?
When we stayed we had booked bed only, but every day a voucher for breakfast was put under our door. This consisted of danish pastries, assorted muffins, cereal, juices, toast, coffee etc. Not healthy, but hey, who wants to watch their waist on holiday!!
If you want a reasonable priced, clean, comfortable hotel in a great location, then the Salisbury is for you.

The Salisbury is the perfect base for a trip to NYC.
The rooms are huge (especially for NY, the staff were very helpful, the location is perfect, 2 blocks from Central Park, and very close to Carnegie Hall, FAO Scwarz, Carnegie Deli and Times Square is easily walkable, plus the subway is a minute away.

Even though the hotel has seen better days:
- it's in a great location
- it's clean
- it's cheap
- the bedrooms are huge, and
- the 57th Street subway station is only a few minutes walk away.
There are lots of places to eat nearby - we ate a delicious pizza in Angelos Italian restaurant, which is two doors away from hotel. We also had breakfast one day in the Green Cafe, again a few doors away from the hotel. Across the road is the Le Parker Meridian hotel and we had a fantastic, although pricey, breakfast in Norma's there one morning.
If you don't want to leave the hotel, a booklet is provided in your room which lists the restaurants who'll deliver directly to your room. Although we didn't use the service, it's an excellent idea!
We booked through Virgin Holidays and the $3 breakfast was included in the price - we weren't told this when we booked the holiday or when we checked in, so if you're travelling with a travel agent, check on arrival if it's included. If we'd known, we would have probably ate there a few more times during our stay or just popped down for a coffee before heading out.
Just a few quibbles:
- The shower's temperature fluctuated quite a bit - one minute it was hot, the next it was cold!
- The staff were okay - not particularly friendly, but then again, not rude either... just average
- As there are only two lifts, it meant that there were queues for them at busy times of the day.
So to sum up, if you want somewhere cheap, clean and central to stay in New York, it's worth checking out the Salisbury.

Upon our arrival in New York City, we were pleasantly suprised about our hotel. It was large, the rooms were very spacious, well laid out and clean. The staff on the reception desk were not very "merry" but the bell boy etc were only too happy to help with any questions we had etc.
The breakfast was $3 and consisted of cereals, cakes, muffins, pastries and fruit. Very nice.
